Parent's bathroom makeover

My parents bought a house in Connecticut on short sale. It's a 1996 cape house with builder basic finishes. Everything was in good working order except for the two upstairs washrooms. The builder had users drywall (not green board or cement board) and the moisture had destroyed the walls above and beneath the shower/bath.
Here are after photos of the hallway bathroom. We gutted it, installed cement boards, new bathtub and toilet. To save on budget, we bought white subway tiles for $1.75/sq ft NYC and I found some 6x12 honed marble tiles on Craigslist for $4.75/sq ft. Since the marble is not high quality, we put them in a herringbone pattern to give them more interest.
The vanity is made from an antique singer sewing machine base with a thick slap of calacatta marble ($275) and a second hand above counter basin ($75). The countertop was too narrow for the sink so we had to do some customization - like add a backsplash trim from left over marble that doesn't match perfectly but we don't mind. :)

Comments (0)We am trying to design our new apartment. We are a family of 5- me( 21 year old girl) , my parents and my two brothers aged 11 ( they are twins). The apartment has 4 bedrooms out of which one for parents, one for my twin brothers, one for me( I would be mostly staying out in my college) and one has to be made into a store room cum worship/temple area. Comments (18)I would consider putting cabinets on the short wall where the utility wall is. Have your stove there centered on the area. Move the sink so it is centered on the long wall where the cooktop is now. Put the fridge on the end run of cabinets closest to the dining table. That will give you an L shape kitchen with a nice work triangle. If you have your heart set on an island remove all the wall cabinets and install a large island. This is not the style of your kitchen but it does show the layout I described above. L shape cabinetry with stove on short end, sink in the middle with DW to right of sink with cabinet above it for dish storage and the refridgerator on the end run so it is out of work triangle and conveniet to the dining area for serving or work triangle for prep and cooking. Island can be any style you desire. L shape with island and open across from island; you might consider this layout if you desire an island. Something like this?...See More

10 years agolast modified: 10 years agoLove the floor! Great job overall in designing this space. The sink is just too tall for the counter. You could still get a wide sink for your tall brother to splash around in ... just a bit shorter. The base could also be used for extra counter space. Really love your idea!
