Thanks so much - I have that pic saved as well. :) For this particular question, I was asking about the wall molding/trim behind the headboard.

Usually when you get side panels you automatically have space on the sides. If you have a full depth cabinet on the top, you automatically have space at the top and in most cases you will have leave at least 1 inch of extra room for the back of the refrigerator, so there is always air circulation since everything is enclosed. In the 70's they use to make a small recessed space behind like Fred said, today you don't have to do that, most Ref have flat backs, recessed wiring, not to mention the supply for ice-maker also comes in a flush mounting kits for the wall... so pretty much everything is recessed and only space you need is for air circulation and 1" is more then enough. In addition, if you make recessed area now and you push ref to far you will never get your doors open so doing all that is a waste of time, in addition most manufacturers starting to make 30" side panels.

I have some suggestions if you are thinking budget friendly changes. Make a photo gallery with different size frames and arrange them parallel to the stairs, so you can enjoy each photo as you climb up. And for the area that will be on a level with your upper floor, try some pretty decal that will connect the photo gallery to upper level. And last, if you have budget add some beautiful hanging lights in the stairwell. Also think about repositioning your refrigerator.

Hi Ankur, I don't think hanging anything over the db is a good idea since there is no breathable space behind the door. the only available space would be equal to the size of the door stopper. Keeping this in mind the shelves would either be too narrow or the door would hit against the shelves perpetually. I would suggest go for a pvc shutter for the db and cover the wall and the db shutter with wallpaper keeping in mind that the shutter should be open able. We had a similar problem at a site and decided to just paint a mural over the shutter. Here are a few images to elaborate that. Regards, RnD Atelier Nagpur
