Depending upon the colors elsewhere you could paint it or whitewash it (the cheapest solution), or you could dry wall over it, or cover it in stone or tile depending upon the look you're going after. The mantle should be removed & IF replaced, mounted lower & chunkier.

For a modern streamlined look, we recommend larger 12x24 tiles.
