Ideas for our mid terraced garden

We have recently completed a side return rear extension on our Victorian mid terraced house and are at a complete loss with our rear garden. We have bifold doors leading onto patio and then 9x 6 metre area we don't know what to do with and patio at the end ..... any thoughts greatly appreciated ......

Start with the basics of where the sun goes (Aspect) and how you'd like to use the space e.g dining table, loungers, space for kids or a grown up sanctuary and so on. Then look at practical considerations such as creating privacy/blocking views you don't want (for example the houses to the rear right), and pay attention to the boundaries - your walls and trellis look like they need a makeover - so remember to factor this into your budget (and I'd consider painting the 'man cave' :)

If your existing patios at each end are staying as they are, you could consider making the middle section a mix of planting and paths (ditch the lawn idea altogether) with some seating mixed in (unless you lave kids that need to kick stuff about of course. Or pop in some raised beds to create some change of level interest.

If you're not engaging a designer then definitely mark out your plot on graph paper and sketch out some ideas.

By the way if you want fruit trees, think about espaliered trees etc which are great space savers - but you need to pick your sunniest spot.

Hi June, this space looks like it has a lot of potential! Do you plan to keep the shed a shed or are you thinking of having a garden studio/seating area, or something along those lines?

A couple of things spring to mind:

Perhaps think about adding some height with a pergola, with the path meandering through- under planting beneath the pergola.

Or

Introduce a curved path and a couple of staggered screens to add some mystery to the space. Planting either side of the path to soften the space.

The amazing thing is that you have the luxury of approaching the architect about these issues. Laminated glass should address the security along with any alarm or security system you plan on installing, though the laminated glass may have size limitations. Regarding the waterproofing you should contact the architect, contactor and waterproofing subcontractor, or see about hiring an independent waterproofing specialist who can detail and warranty the condition. As a design consideration, make the lower area a garden or gallery or sculpture area and upper should be all glass. Maybe a garden roof there too if accessible or visible. In any case looks like an amazing place!!

I would suggest you to cover some part or whole of the terrace floor with artificial grass. It stays green all year round and is also very easy to maintain as compared to natural grass. However, leave the place where you plan to install BBQ basin as it may get damaged because of fire. You can even place a swinger and 1 or 2 garden table set.

Hello there, You could scoop them out with a flat trowel and scrap cement backing with that as well. But it won't be much of a success and you will lose around 30-40 %. You could DIY broken tiles mosaics as an art ; frame and fix it on the wall itself with an appropriate glue. Or search for other DIYs on youtube. You could replace them with decals as described @cornerstone studio , but there's a catch ; high heat areas could deform and de-glue the decals as well. The most important thing will be to avoid taking the lawn all the way to the edges. Shape the lawn - perhaps a circle or with wavy edges. Then plant beds either side. Perhaps add a brick border between the lawn and beds, and offset the path so it's not right in the middle.

We are keeping the shed .... it's my husbands man cave and pride and joy .... maybe thinking of a couple of trees ? Fruit that don't grow too high and maybe separating bits of garden ....

While this space has lots of potential, it must feel daunting. I suggest you hunt iPlayer for Monty Don's programme where he helps folk in your situation. You will find lots of ideas there. Your garden is not unlike one at the end of last week. You can see the spaces from start to finish. It always helps! Good luck.

Some louvered fencing would be a nice touch as would raised beds but remember to select timber that is suitable for use in ground contact such as pressure treated timber to British Standard 8417.

Hi June, The original garden walls are a great feature and worth showing off if they are in reasonable condition? I would also recommend cladding or disguising the shed since it dominates your perspective.

Try to create some mystery and lead the eye around the garden with off set shapes and vertical features otherwise the shed will always dominate.
