Bungalow Facade Renovation Help!

Hi everyone,

I am the proud owner of a 1950's detached bungalow in Reading. We have finalised plans to extend to the side (replacing the existing garage) and to the rear to increase our living space and add additional bedrooms but we are struggling with how to transform the façade. So far we have ordered anthracite grey uPVC triple glazing and a modern anthracite grey, glazed panel front door.

I am torn between having a pitched roof on the extension (mirroring the left of the house) and using a mixture of render and cladding to blend the new extension with the old house, or leaving the current house alone and creating a flat roof extension in stark contrast perhaps with a sedum roof. I would greatly appreciate any ideas anyone has!

I think i'd find out from the local council about any wants and wishes they might have and any restrictions. I don't think that massively grand plans are warranted on this type of property. Yes, of course you want it to look nice, but just because some things are possible, doesn't make them a good idea every time, and everyone has a budget, Radically changing the exterior in this case needs to be kept in the realms of realistic for the style and situ of the property and end re-sale price plus type of purchase likely to buy. Going ultra modern and pie in the sky with ideas is a waste of money most probably.

Grey windows do not in my opinion sit well with red brick for instance or a brown roof. You could render then whole facade in a colour of your choice or paint the bricks to darken down with iron oxide and make them sit better with Grey. The driveway needs an uplift and you'd have to address the finish and colour of the wall to the perimeter to match.

A pitched roof to tie in would also, in my opinion look better.

Tsilanko, I would always recommend professional installation where needed. But what I am doing here is suggesting that WHEN you are planning to build or renovate, to consider how your plans will affect you in 20 or 30 years time. Split levels are very hep when you are young. A kitchen 3 steps down at 30 is rarely a problem, but might be a hazard at 60, or, as Marjie1059 suggested, if you break a leg. ... All my parents' homes were terrible for old people. They were forced to move to a bungalow in extreme old sge because the location and design of their home was more suitable for an active young couple with a large family than for an elderly couple with stroke disabilities. I would not want to move again, so my present home has features built in that make ageing in place simpler. Mostly small changes, like grab rails, and lever handles on doors and faucets. A major disability suddenly suffered requires major changes if permanent. I did look at this because it came up in the discussion, but if you look at the heading, Planning for Disability, it means just that. Plan ahead so you don't have to make expensive changes later on. But thank you for your advice, yes, major changes are not in the DIY domain.

What a beautiful house, Shahbaaz! I live in a similar house - a 150-year-old colonial bungalow in Kumaon. You have already received lots of excellent advice from better-qualified people, so all I would say is, keep its age and heritage character the central theme. The white tiles do clash, I am afraid ... flooring with terracotta tiles would echo the roof and look lovely. The columns and the arches over the doors and windows are amazing. But I'd say, leave it all chuna-painted - there's a beauty and softness to it. Don't let the painters add too much neel (indigo) in the limewash -- in the hills where I live, they put far too much if I don't watch out and the result is a harsh white. Natural lime has a softer, creamy look.

Hi ,

I think it would be best to show the new part of the property as 'new' and give it its own identity, by doing it sympathetically it will ensure that it works nicely sitting beside the old property.

This maybe something that is worth speaking to an architect about?

What is the front of the new part like? It is difficult to give imput without seeing the entire property. Even the inside of the property (style and colours) could have an impact on how the outside should look and visa versa.

it is very likely that your local authority ask for matching materials to be used for your new roofing, I also think you should go for a matching pitch roof. I also think mahogany style door and windows would have been a better match with the rest of the house.

I'd carry the ridge along over the existing garage area for continuity, A sedum roof is going to look out of place on this type of build, and in my mind doesn't really work with the property.

I agree with the above that grey windows and red brick don't match, everything Ive seen and liked has been a white or cream rendered finish. This is fine, but rendering a place just gives you a maintenance bill.

Rather than going ultra modern, suggest looking at spending some money on the kerb appeal, it would really suit a spray resin driveway with grey kerbstones.
