Comments (52)A houzz contributor, not too long ago, had made a wine rack out of 4'x4' wooden pallets, that are used in the US to move a load of goods with a fork-lift truck. Perhaps they have them in your country. He cut them in half so they were only two feet deep and stacked them up to high counter height. The wood would be a nice contrast with your concrete, might add a little warmth to the space. cascio.offsite@gmail.com...See MoreNeed help for my library it's in ruins
Comments (14)What is opposite your desk? I think that's the only wall we haven't seen. it must be the one below in the ceiling fan photo. With the style of your windows and color of the trim, I think I'd do the walls with a specialty treatment to get the Old World plaster warmth going. You may find a wallpaper that replicates that look, if you like the look an prefer paper. The photos would tell me to turn the desk to float, centered on the window so you can look out. Your chair would face the window with your back to the bookcases, although I might move those to the wall we haven't seen. You have one full bookcase and one mostly empty. Bring in some decor items and style them with 1/3 books, 1/3 decor and 1/3 open space....See MorePlanning for disability
Comments (228)Tsilanko, I would always recommend professional installation where needed. But what I am doing here is suggesting that WHEN you are planning to build or renovate, to consider how your plans will affect you in 20 or 30 years time. Split levels are very hep when you are young. A kitchen 3 steps down at 30 is rarely a problem, but might be a hazard at 60, or, as Marjie1059 suggested, if you break a leg. ... All my parents' homes were terrible for old people. They were forced to move to a bungalow in extreme old sge because the location and design of their home was more suitable for an active young couple with a large family than for an elderly couple with stroke disabilities. I would not want to move again, so my present home has features built in that make ageing in place simpler. Mostly small changes, like grab rails, and lever handles on doors and faucets. A major disability suddenly suffered requires major changes if permanent. I did look at this because it came up in the discussion, but if you look at the heading, Planning for Disability, it means just that. Plan ahead so you don't have to make expensive changes later on. But thank you for your advice, yes, major changes are not in the DIY domain....See MoreBig space on staircase wall. What to do with it?
Comments (19)you are thinking about the space right now. it looks odd, no doubt. 1) when you fill in with the furniture, just make sure the three steps are hidden. 2) consider three potted plants of different height, so the rectangle is complete. 3) glass bowl with Siamese fighting fish for each step 4) figurines of different heights 5) 2inch square wooden bar on each step up to the top of the rectangle. and complete the entire rectangle if you want with a smaller rectangle open in the center my suggestion is, there is a reason why this space ended up like this. it will look great once you put something there. things like these are what make your house unique....See Morejinglebelle
