Big space on staircase wall. What to do with it?

Hi There,
My home is about to be completed in India. I love everything about my home except one big space on the staircase wall . I just do not know what to do with it. Can you please suggest if possible what can be done with that space? Your help is really appreciated. - Suniti

Unusual, you could make it a feature, like the screen or shelves as an open bookcase. It's a tricky one.

Hi Anuragini, Well we usually decorate all the "livable" spaces of our home and often skip the transitional ones. Revamping these with a little bit of creativity adds immensely to the entire aesthetics of the home space. Here are a few suggestions - 1. Adding an accent piece such as a huge wall clock or a wall sculpture can really add drama to the staircase space, bringing it into the limelight. Travel collectibles such as masks from all the countries you have been too or little mementos collected as you travel also make up for a very interesting display. They give the otherwise drab wall a huge face-lift. 3. Photographs of your family, their travels, their achievements are always a great option to decorate the staircase wall with. This way you can relive those memories and they serve as good conversation starters too. For a more softer look you may opt for wallpapers as well. These days they come in all colours, patterns and textures providing a lot of options to choose from. You can go for the regular damask ones if you want to play safe as they are not very loud and act as a good background to photo frames, mirrors etc. If you want to make a statement you may opt for rather bold colours with simple geometric patterns as elaborated below. the wall is made of cement and the staircase has marble, so doing some changes will affect the marble and then more expensive.

If your home is under construction why not just fill in the hole?

Why not have a railing built like the other side of the stairs? It would be stunning. Otherwise fill in the opening.

HI -- I think if you put an Indian style screen that is much bigger than the opening over it will be a very nice feature .

My guess is that this area is open to bring light into the stairwell. You can have a custom-made panel of safety glass (will not shatter), a wood or laser-cut metal screen, or some shelving.
Do you need a handrail for the stairs?

hi felizlady, you are right we made this gap so that lit comes in. actually i am not just sure if i need a hand rail over there. but if you can point to some pictures that can show how hand rail will look like, it would be really great. thanks

You have a railing on the other side, so I think a screen is the right way to go. Clearly too hard to close up, although that would have been my first choice (can always add lights!)...

you are thinking about the space right now. it looks odd, no doubt.

1) when you fill in with the furniture, just make sure the three steps are hidden.

2) consider three potted plants of different height, so the rectangle is complete.

3) glass bowl with Siamese fighting fish for each step

4) figurines of different heights

5) 2inch square wooden bar on each step up to the top of the rectangle. and complete the entire rectangle if you want with a smaller rectangle open in the center

my suggestion is, there is a reason why this space ended up like this. it will look great once you put something there. things like these are what make your house unique.

Hi,even i liked your concept very much...i have introduced this concept of home entry hallway having a large window on drawing wall opposite of foyer...its purpose is to give the glimpse of the sofa seating and the room while coming inside the house....im finding many ways to decorate both walls in such a way so it looks symetrical and impressive...may b pic gives a better idea from hallway and inside drawing room....suggestions r welcome

U can make book self there or make designer storage there in wooden where u Cn put small stuff which looks really nice
