Great room. Whats your budget? For a quick fix before Christmas I would ditch the clock. Hang a large mirror or picture over fireplace. Change cushions for same colours but not plain - textured, checks or patterns. Finally buy some large wicker baskets for your toys. Laura Ashley do good wicker or try the holding company.
This is what I did to my own place. I did that painting on left over wood from making the floating shelves...Or you can add frames with family pics to the fireplace. I also created a kids corner for the little one. The baskets I already had, bought them in Lombok, some years back.
I'd definitely get rid of the clock. Get a mirror as said above. Maybe also ditch the curtains for blinds.
If you want you could also hang the TV above the fire place. If there's sky/cable TV boxes maybe get a nice enclosed unit and store them in the space the TV is at the moment if you do
A simple solution to enhance your room would be replace the clock with a stylish mirror to reflect the room, for an illusion of a greater space. Alternatively you could hang a contemporary looking image. The curtains and mantelpiece decoration look quite plain and outdated, so perhaps consider replacing them with more stylish decor. Some inspiring ideas in [this great Houzz article[(https://www.houzz.co.uk/magazine/styling-10-easy-ideas-for-improving-a-period-fireplace-stsetivw-vs~53739871) I came across.
You're lucky enough to have a built in fireplace and would be a waste to have it empty. To create a homely ambience and create a loving focal point to the room you may want to update it with a simple DIY fire insert for an easy solution to a real flame fireplace.
