Richard Leggin Architects
Green Building in Washington D.C..
“We hired RLA to design our custom house which was recently completed in March 2015. We couldn't be happier with the results and would recommend them to any prospective home builder. From the beginning, we knew we did not want the standard cookie cutter two story colonial that is everywhere in our area, we wanted a custom house with a modern esthetic, not an existing builder plan with a few modifications.
Builders will typically tell you that you do not need an architect, and that may be true from a construction perspective, but by forgoing an architect, you lose the opportunity to build a really special house, customized exactly to your needs. It does not add that much extra to the cost.
From the beginning, RLA listened to our ideas, paid attention to our budget and designed our home to our exact specifications. While there are many illustrations of how this benefited us, here are three examples:
Orientation - we wanted a house that would take the best advantage of natural light and available views. RLA worked hard to orient our house properly on the site and we now have great light, great views and privacy where we want it. The room layout also makes maximum usage of available light and each room has a great view. A builder will just plop your house on the site facing the street, regardless of the orientation of sunlight or privacy.
Details - RLA incorporated details in our house that give it that custom, personalized look. Our deep soffitt details, rock stair wall and porch are really unique.
Proportions - This is a hard one to describe, but RLA did a great job with sizing details, the proportions including room sizes, trim details, etc. Everything in the house flows beautifully and feels balanced and gracious. Architects understand how big rooms should be! Not to big or too small.
My advice to prospective home builders is to forgo more square footage for better advice, materials and design. An architect will ensure you have a really unique home that fits your lifestyle”
Ileana Schinder, PLLC
Green Building in Washington D.C..
“We met with Ileana to discuss possible renovation ideas to our 1960s house to open up the space and to re-think our upstairs bathrooms. She designed the project in a way that allowed us to consider the two pieces (upstairs and downstairs) both separately and together. We originally thought we would focus on the upstairs initially, but we were so happy with the redesigned first floor that we ended up deciding to tackle this project first. We contracted with a local company to do the work, and they have had no problems following Ileana's architectural drawings.”
William Wheeler Architect
Green Building in Washington D.C..
“Very happy I selected Bill Wheeler as the architect who helped make our "dream" renovation a reality. Bill drew up the plans for this substantial kitchen and bathroom renovation, which involved the removal of two load-bearing wall portions and the need to create solutions to resulting flow challenges in the home's new layout. Bill demonstrated that he is highly-skilled and competent in the field. He was also easy to work with and patient. He listened to what we wanted, yet also had a great way of emphasizing--without pushing--his design recommendations that were not exactly what was initially in our mind. I am also happy with the contract selection and administration that he provided. He presided over periodic meetings with the owner and the general contractor, was key in preventing miscommunication, and crucial to timely resolution when conflict issues arose. We hired him after a deliberative search, and have no regrets at all!”
Kohlmark Flach Architects
Green Building in Washington D.C..
“Tom Flach, our architect at Kohlmark, 100% understood what we wanted in our new home. But he didn’t stop there, he made the plans better than we even knew were possible. Tom was always available to answer our questions and to help us with any decisions or issues that arose. His skill, his vision, his guidance, and integrity made this experience a lot easier for us.”
AK Jones Design
Green Building in Washington D.C..
“Kaila is wonderful! She listens to your ideas and concerns. She provides multiple choices for every item and then develops concept boards so you can see how everything comes together. She never rushes you into making a decision. She’s also careful to provide choices within the budget you’ve established. It is definitely a real pleasure working with Kaila. I can’t recommend her high enough.”
Moser Architects PLLC
Green Building in Washington D.C..
“I recommended Moser Architects, PLLC to everyone looking to build or renovate in the DMV area. Sarah took our quaint Cape Cod home in North Arlington and made it into a beautiful home for a growing family. We told Sarah how we wanted to keep the charm and curb appeal that fit the neighborhood, and she surpassed our expectations. Our home could not be more functional thanks to Sarah's expertise, and we are always receiving compliments. Our open floor plan with large amounts of natural light could not be more perfect. If we ever take the plunge to purchase another home in NOVA in need of renovations, Sarah will receive the first phone call.”
Eustilus Architecture
Green Building in Washington D.C..
“As a long-time client of Eustilus Architecture, I'm continually impressed by Eric's exceptional service and architectural expertise. Having collaborated with him on at least five rental property renovations and a significant third-floor pop-up project for our own home in DC, it's clear that Eric's skill and dedication are unparalleled.
What sets Eric apart is his ability to handle projects of varying scales with the same level of detail and professionalism. From designing a cozy BBQ area to undertaking complex rental renovations and even personal home projects, Eric's versatility and creativity shine through in every task.
One of the most noteworthy aspects of working with Eric is his adeptness in using modern technology. His ability to leverage these tools for design visualization not only aids in better understanding the project but also ensures that the final outcome aligns perfectly with our expectations.
Beyond his technical prowess, Eric's approachability and willingness to engage at every project stage make the process enjoyable and stress-free. Whether it's following up on an ongoing project or offering insights for future endeavors, Eric is always available to provide guidance and answer any queries we might have.
Having worked with numerous architectural firms over 15 years, our continuous collaboration with Eric for over five years speaks volumes about his reliability, skill, and professionalism. If you're looking for an architect who combines expertise with a client-focused approach, look no further than Eric at Eustilus Architecture.”
Design Depictions Structural Engineering, P.C.
Green Building in Washington D.C..
“I have used Design Depictions for multiple projects. They have always been very professional and responsive. Their ideas and engineering practices have been very helpful. I look forward to my next project.”
Gardner Architects LLC
Green Building in Washington D.C..
“As an architectural photographer, I have known and worked for Amy Gardner of Gardner Mohr Architects for more than five years. She is one of a group of architects that is thinking about the future and how she can utilize her generous talents to make better more sustainable and environmentally friendly buildings. I have found her designs to be invigorating. The spaces eminently functional and her designs to utilize the available light and air flow to be of equal magnitude. In short, the spaces and buildings are livable, functional, breathing spaces that are simply exiting and fun to be in. It has always been my pleasure to photograph these spaces and to convey with a photograph what Gardner Mohr Architects have created.”
Upton Architecture, LLC
Green Building in Washington D.C..
“Margaret Upton designed a fabulous second floor addition for our one floor 50's rambler. The three bedroom, two bath addition perfectly captured our dream of more space without looking like a "McMansion". We now have an incredible new space that exudes charm and warmth inside and out that beautifully ties in the old with the new. We frequently receive compliments on how well the design fits into street without overpowering the neighboring house - just what we wanted. Working with Margaret exceeded our expectations in every way.”
