The Vrindavan Project

“The Vrindavan Project is the embodiment of what it means to run a conscious architectural practice and build conscious buildings. To build consciously might mean to be aware of one's design intention; to have an understanding of the physical context in which the building is to be made; to work with the resources, manpower and materials available; to have respect towards the local environment and towards all human beings involved in the process; to pay attention to the ways of nature; to create a space of learning through the making of the building itself; to be true to one's vision and sculpt it to life with the utmost awareness, love and care: all of which The Vrindavan Project does with grace, patience, consistency and meticulousness. As an artist (and an architect), I've had the opportunity to closely witness two of their projects come to life, both of which are residences in two entirely different parts of India. An amalgamation of scale, volume, light, texture, technology, shifting perspectives, and structural integrity are some of the qualities which seem to shape their buildings. Every surface of the structure demands to be looked at, touched, beheld: the rough against the smooth, light against dark, hard against soft, transparent against opaque. There is an earthy tactileness to their buildings. It is familiar, as if one has known the space quite dearly in the past but also having never seen anything like it before. Every turn around or within their buildings is a new perspective to gaze upon and appreciate: such is their attention to detail. There is a timeless quality to these buildings. On entering them, the air feels different, as does the quality of light. One automatically feels one's breath becoming calmer, eyes softening, muscles relaxing: as if the space is saying to you, "listen...look...inhale...exhale..." Over the last ten years, it has been an honour and a privilege to watch them work and see their visions come to life. Look forward to seeing The Vrindavan Project continue to evolve, grow and create through the years to come!”
