Traditional, Budget-Friendly Kitchen - Cleveland Park, DC

The original kitchen contained four openings – a rarely used back door, a much used basement door, a hallway door, and another doorway to a tiny room which the previous owners used as a breakfast area. In order to create more of a connection between the kitchen and the breakfast room, we extended the door header with a 42” high counter which continued into the breakfast room. We then removed outdated and underused bookshelves in order to create room for an L-shaped upholstered banquette and a round table. Finally, we mounted a small flat-panel TV in the new opening, which can be swiveled to face either the kitchen or sunroom. Ultimately, we created a space where guests can sit and chat with the cook without being physically in the way, but also functions as a cozy and comfortable area for the homeowners to enjoy during lazy Sunday mornings.
