Shopwyke Manor

We were approached by an existing client to renew and extend their listed manor house in 2018. At the time, Shopwyke was a dilapidated, multi-century dwelling that was slowly working its way back into the ground. Our brief was to eek out space that didn’t exist, extended where possible, renew fabric where there was no option to preserve and of course, protect the listed building. Our solution was to totally remodel the interior layout, but in a way that preserved and enhanced its 15th century core and sympathetically extended in a way the didn’t detract from it heritage. The extension is finely detailed using traditional techniques and materials, but in a modern way. Handmade materials were used where reclaimed options were not available and modern materials used where we highlight the transition from old to new. Whilst renovating, we took the opportunity to increase the dwelling’s sustainability credentials. By insulating walls, floors and ceilings, adding breather and air leakage membranes, replacing single glazing with conservation thin double glazing and replacing the heating system with an efficient underfloor heated solution, the carbon impact of the listed building is now an a par with some of our new build projects.
