Family-friendly entrance and mudroom

With four athletic kids, this family wanted to make their typical suburban house work better for their minivan, sports-oriented lifestyle. Like many families, the garage had become their main entry into their house. The client wanted a way to corral the muddy shoes, gear and coats upon entry. The architect's solution: Convert one of the two existing garage bays into a light-filled mudroom/laundry room that would become a new, informal entry to the home and add another garage bay to the right (all shown in this view). The client requested that each member of the family have his/her own locker to hang coats and store gear, complete with benches.
