Lighting design plays a key role in changing the look and feel of a space. To achieve a well-illuminated home, it is important to strike the right balance between direct and indirect lighting. Recessed cove lighting is a great way to bring in indirect lighting and to make a style statement. This is a popular technique in which the source of illumination is hidden and tucked away within the ceilings, walls or cornices. It creates a diffused illumination by throwing light upwards to the ceiling or downwards on the walls or flooring and does not produce excessive glare.

Here are some inspiring ideas and looks to steal.

1. On the ceiling
Introducing recessed lighting in the ceiling can heighten the ambience of any space. Here, in this living room, cove lights act as accent lighting that emphasises the design of the faux ceiling. A soft ambience is created with even light distribution.

2. Highlight the drapery
In this living room by PS Design, see how the recessed lighting falling on the curtains creates a shimmering look, imparting elegance and richness to the room.

Tip: The full-length curtains suspended from the ceiling give the effect of greater height to the room.

3. In the wall panelling
In this space by Fulcrum Studio; recessed lighting is cleverly used to transform a simple passage into a striking one. The strip or rope lights fixed within the wall panelling illuminate the passage while creating an impressive visual effect.

4. In the back-panel of the bed
Take a look at this bedroom: the recessed lighting within the headboard of the bed is reflected in a soft glow on the back wall. The yellow illumination and a subdued colour scheme play wonderfully with each other to create a sublime mood and relaxing atmosphere.

6. On the floor
There is so much you can do with recessed lighting, like in this space. Notice how the glow of neon-blue lights reflecting downwards adds exuberance to the room.

Tip: Another way to add drama to your room is by introducing warm LED lighting under the bed or on suspended counters.

7. As an accent feature
Think out of the box and transform diffused lighting into a work of art. An array of three-dimensional wooden boxes highlight the wall here, with recessed lighting to form an eye-catching detail.

8. Illuminate the wardrobe
Why stop at walls and ceilings? Cove lighting is an excellent way to light up a wardrobe too, like in this example, where the LED strip lights are fixed on the frame.

Tip: Incorporate an attached sensor to the wardrobe, which turns on the LED rail light the moment one opens the wardrobe panel.

9. As stairway lighting
How about introducing recessed lighting in the staircase? It not only looks graceful but also ensures a well-lit passage down and up.
