A combination of both direct and indirect lighting can transform the look of the any space within your home, and this includes kitchens. Most conventional Indian kitchens, however, only have provision for direct lighting, such as ceiling-mounted and pendant lights.

1. As ceiling tray light
Bring indirect cove lighting into your faux ceiling. These lights create a diffused illumination by throwing light upwards to the ceiling and add to the general lighting of the kitchen.

2. Introduce down-lighting
One can also heighten the ambience of the kitchen by fixing LED down-lights on the skirting of the lower cabinets. Just as in this example, the source of indirect lighting is directed downwards to create a floating effect that softly illuminates the kitchen.
Tip: This type of lighting should be planned at the design phase itself and it cannot be an afterthought. There should be a gap of at least 4 inches between the lower cabinet and flooring to attain a floating effect.

Have fun with LED lighting
Make a bold style statement with colourful LED rope lighting. Take a look at this kitchen counter: the blue LED lights impart a colourful glow and impart a stunning look.
Note: There should be a separate set of switches for the coloured lighting because this type of mood lighting will be switched on only occasionally.

3. In the shelves
Strategically placed cove lighting can be introduced within the kitchen shelves. As in this example, see how recessed lighting adds sparkle to the shelves and highlights the displayed items.

4. Under-cabinet lighting
Indirect under-cabinet lighting can breathe life into a simple space. Not only does it add style but also creates focused lighting on the kitchen countertop. Such lighting aids efficiency in the kitchen activities when preparing and cooking food.
Tip: Note that this type of lighting can be easily introduced by attaching LED rope lights onto the base of the upper cabinets of an existing kitchen.

5.Cove lighting between ceiling and upper cabinet
Here, in this example, small strips of rope lights are hidden in between the top of the cabinets and the ceiling. I love the way the lights heighten the sleek modern look and the sense of lightness of the space, so the full-height cabinets do not look overpowering.
