There are different ways you can enhance an interior and make it look striking. One of them is by experimenting with broad or narrow abstract lines – on furnishings, flooring, walls, windows and more. Here we look at twelve examples that elaborate on how this element affects different spaces.

1. Highlighting the open bookshelf are thick black bands that frame the book case, giving it a stylish lift. Black also makes friends with the other colours in the room, including contemporary shades of shiny grey and the brown wood.
Euro Laguna Marble, Inc.
2. It almost looks like a sleek carpet – limestone floor tiles are surrounded by custom-cut slab strips of limestone and black marble that make up the border. The dark framed windows and the chandelier contribute to the black additions in this light scape, creating a magnetic-looking interior.

3. This staircase gets a dose of high design in the most non-complicated way possible – a beige carpet runner with a prominent black border down the staircase, immediately adding dynamic volume to the slimline silhouette.

4. I love this shower because it shows a shift away from the traditional plain glass doors, with the incorporation of one element – sharp black aluminium frames. They give the glass panelling more body and character. Mirroring the effect of the black lines is the basin stand, also made of black aluminium rods. What a lovely, luxe effect this creates.

5. An all-white bathroom is transformed by black stripes running along and across the floor and up to the ceiling of the room. This design draws the eye towards the length and breadth of the room, giving the illusion of expanded space. It also helps to give it focus, preventing it from feeling too bleached out.

6. I believe bathrooms are a great place for going a little design crazy: this scribble-style wallpaper is a case in point. Bold, graphic and eye-catching, these super-busy stark black lines splashed across the bathroom add lots of movement to the design.

7. Gallery-style picture walls give a nice, artistic touch to any space, especially in a case like this, where the room is a bleached, neutral space. The grid-style structure and matching fine black frames against plain walls create a smart, attractive look, while retaining a tranquil atmosphere, ideal for a bedroom.

8. Sometimes subtlety is the key – wall-to-ceiling black might seem too dark to live with, but a few slim features can make a statement. Take this bedroom, for example – see how the frames of the four poster bed, the artwork and the swing behind create a wraparound effect of black lines.

9. A nursery imagined inside a world of black and white. The layering of dark and light elements along with a clash of patterns is brilliant here – be it the graphic printed rug, white cot and bedding (with an accent pillow that echoes the rug’s pattern), the black armchair with delicate white piping or the white window blind with black borders.

10. These clean, black-framed windows almost double as artworks on the plain white walls (where no other wall art is used or needed). The delicate pendant, too, contributes to the look and enhances the design of the room with its thin, black lines.
Trevor Brown Architects
11. The graphic tiles in this industrial-style kitchen give depth to the solid, monochrome scheme. The use of narrow black lines against the white wall help define the pattern better and provide that all-important contrast. The pendant lights tie in with the industrial theme, too, and create another layer of interest.

12. The thick black grid pattern of the windows creates a cosy cocooning for the interiors, allowing ample yet filtered light inside. It makes the plain glass windows stand out; also, the smart design style frames the scenery outside and draws the eyes to the beauty of the outdoors.
