Black and white is a classic colour scheme. This combination has the ability to take over any area of the home and make it look mesmerising. There is also a sense of timelessness that these colours bring to a space.

Here’s a look at ways in which this palette can bring the word ‘bold’ to define your home.
Bailey London Interior Design & Build
1. A kitchen lit up with dark accents
The black-latticed wall on the right brings in a bit of complexity to the straight-lined black-and-white kitchen. The extension of the island and the pendant lights accentuate the black-and-white theme.

It could have been a staid old, albeit efficient, kitchen with neutral colours and tiling, but this space shows how to pep up a space with the allure of black and white – look at the mirrored splashback along with the dark island counter top and stools. The stark colour scheme of the area is complemented with wooden flooring, which adds warmth to the scheme.

2. A white interior with black decorations
A living room with a feature wall of black-and-white accessories that complement the furniture is another way to play with the contrasting look. See how, in this space, everything from the vases and lamps to the books and artwork are colour coordinated to achieve a dramatic effect.

Tip: Accessories are interchangeable and allow you to experiment with the look of a room. If you feel your black-and-white room looks too monotonous, bring in relief with a few coloured accessories. Alternatively, a vibrantly coloured room can be toned down with monochromatic elements.

3. A soothing bedroom with a punch of black
This bedroom presents a picture of perfection with its clean lines and cleverly placed accessories. The all-white space gets a kick of black from the framed pieces showcasing black-and-white photographs. The patterned pillows and black-painted chair also help complete the look, while the beige carpet and the wooden side table lend softness to the colour scheme.

4. A yin and yang bathroom
SPACES ARCHITECTS@ka show how this palette, combined with patterns and motifs, can add a sense of oomph to a bathroom. The two basins, one black and the other white, the walls featuring vertical stripes and the decorative designs on the mirrors and ceiling – all fit together to create a bold space.

5. A definitive living room
This living room designed by Rhythm and Emphasis Design Studio makes the colour scheme the driving force of the room’s design. The all-white furniture, marble flooring and walls are lifted with the use of black marble niches, centre table and cushions. The window blinds, paintings and wall blocks follow the black-and-white theme, too.

Alternatively, in a living room like this where the carpet is dictating the black-and-white scheme, the introduction of the pink and blue cushions adds a sense of vibrancy and frolic to the space.

Tip: As is noticeable in the image, bright colours usually pop up well against a monochromatic palette.
Concetto Design Co.
6. Contrasting flavours in the dining area
The dining room by Concetto Design Co. is a vivid space with bold prints that ride on just two solid colours. The pristine dining table and chairs sit in the midst of contrasting black-and-white elements, such as the printed curtains, the polka-dotted wallpaper and the patterned rug.

Tip: To soften the contrast that opposing colours can evoke, consider introducing a muted third shade. In this space, see how the light beige floor provides a bit of respite and warmth to the dining area.
