8 Modern & Efficient Kitchen Designs
Take a look at these stylish kitchen designs that save space and enhance efficiency
Space-efficient, modern kitchen designs provide for ample storage, allow unobstructed movement and make working in the kitchen a breeze. From narrow galleys to three-sided U-shaped ones, here are some kitchen layouts that boost productivity with clever planning and innovative storage – and inspire you to move a few things around in yours, too.
1. Installing a kitchen island with a cooktop in the middle of this L-shaped kitchen makes the layout more space-efficient. The kitchen by Marvel Realtors Projects uses the otherwise void floor area and cuts down on extra footsteps, allowing one to move easily between the sink and other appliances. Along with cabinetry along the entire L-length, the under-stove storage is an added bonus.
2. Designed to suit open-plan living, here’s a modern U-shaped kitchen design by DBI Design Build, with the signature kitchen peninsula that doubles as a counter to enjoy beverages and breakfast – and keep conversation flowing. The refrigerator seems to be outside the ‘U’, making way for more counters. With the sink and stove within arm’s reach, foot traffic is reduced and work efficiency improved.
3. Adding a countertop or table to this open-plan kitchen doesn’t eat up on extra space and offers plenty of built-in drawers and shelves for storage. It creates the perfect in-kitchen hangout spot for the family and demarcates the seating area. Built-in kitchen appliances like the cooktop, refrigerator and so on give a sleek finish to this modular kitchen. With the table just a few steps away from the stove, you are never too far from a hot meal.

4. This modish kitchen design by Pramukh Modular Kitchen shows how less can be more. Fitted into a small corner are all the appliances, such as the microwave, oven, induction cooktop and all, with a sink on the opposite wall. It adheres to the kitchen work triangle rule where the stove, refrigerator and sink are installed at the points of an imaginary triangle, to improve efficiency.
5. This narrow galley kitchen layout by Shahen Mistry Architects uses length to its advantage. Though the cooktop, refrigerator and sink are placed along the same wall, the layout is practical and ensures easy access to all three. The cabinetry on both sides helps keep the area clutter-free, which is key to a well-organised kitchen.
6. In this wide, U-shaped kitchen, Spaces Architects@ka gives plenty of counter space as the cooktop is set on the island, which also demarcates the wet kitchen with the prep and cleaning area (left) from the dry kitchen plus baking area by the ovens (right). The stove is accessible from either side to stimulate work efficiency and productivity. The lower and the upper cabinetry ensure optimum storage and give you the option to stack things as per usage.

7. Commonly referred to as the straight-line kitchen, this one-wall layout enhances productivity by keeping appliances, cooking tools and ingredients within easy reach. It creates the illusion of more space. A small cabinet for glassware near the window at the far end takes advantage of its generous length.
8. If you have a studio or very compact apartment, then a space-saving kitchenette layout like this can take the place of a full-fledged kitchen. There’s wall-mounted storage for crockery, dishes and pantry items; appliances like a mini refrigerator go below the stove – making working in the kitchen almost step-free. One has the option to reduce the counter width to fit wall niches and accommodate only essential appliances.
