Want a special touch of mystique and elegance in you room? Backlighting is a form of mood lighting that effortlessly brings in an element of glamour and sophistication into the home’s decor. This is a simple lighting technique in which decorative wall or ceiling panels, furniture and so on are lit from behind with LED strip lights, focus lights or tube lights to achieve a subtle or bright glow, depending on the decor. This type of lighting should be planned at the design phase itself so that the electrical wiring for backlighting gets concealed within the wall plaster, wall panels or raw furniture; also the source of light should not visible.

Take a look at some inspirational ways to introduce backlighting within your home.

1. Light up jalis
In this living room, backlighting highlights the jali to form an accent feature that is carried from the wall panel to span the ceiling. The soft lighting creates a soothing and luxurious ambience.

2. Install backlit translucent stone
Backlit onyx exudes warmth and becomes the showstopper element of this bar. The translucent stone makes the space come alive by showing off its natural veins and vivid colours when lit from behind.

3. Highlight wall panels
Here in this space, LED strip lights are installed behind the tall wooden panels to bring depth and accentuate the height of the space. Simple details impart so much elegance and personality.

I love the way some wooden panels are set forward from the wall surface and backlit from behind to give an offbeat look to the bathroom. So chic!
Fulcrum Studio
Here is a classic example of backlighting with LED focus lights. Soft illumination, along with a play of light and shadow, gives the decorative wall panels a stunning look.

4. Create floating boxes
Just see how an array of floating boxes adds drama and takes the decor to a whole new level.

Tip: To achieve such lighting effects, bring in an experienced electrical contractor and a carpenter who can execute the job properly. They will have to make provision for elaborate wiring for the LED strip lights in each box such that they are controlled by a single switch.

5. Border the bed headboards
For those who love all things understated yet grand, consider adding an LED strip light around the bed’s headboard. In this bedroom, the subtle backlighting imparts softness and adds a whole new dimension to an otherwise subdued space.

6. Within shelves
Add sparkle and instant brightness by introducing bright backlighting within the shelves of a unit. The backlighting styles the room and creates an energised space.

7. Within the staircase skirting
How about transforming a simple staircase into a star attraction? In this example, the staircase is backlit from the sides of the skirting to create an impressive visual effect. Such lighting ensures a well-lit passage so there will be no need for a night-light.

Tip: This detail will have to be pulled off during the RCC (reinforced cement concrete) casting of the staircase in the construction phase. Maintain a minimum spacing of at least 3 inches between the wall and the staircase to allow proper cleaning and maintenance, and space for lighting.

8. In the kitchen
Backlighting the kitchen countertop aids efficiency while preparing food and during cleaning. In this kitchen, LED lights are fixed within a pelmet which runs the width of the kitchen, and they highlight the designer backsplash tiles and the countertop. It’s hard to miss the floating effect created by recessed cove lighting within the lower cabinets.

9. Behind bathroom mirrors
To make a bathroom more dramatic, add LED lights to the back of the mirror. This layered depth adds to the stylish look of the space.
Class apart
Infuse a sense of luxury by introducing strip lighting within the basin countertop. In this bathroom, backlighting creates a relaxing spa effect and cuts the darkness of the browns.

10. Natural backlighting
Who says backlighting can only be introduced with artificial lights? Here, in this image, natural backlighting enhances the quality of light within the interiors. Simply fix sheer curtains in front of the large windows and flood your space with filtered natural light.
