Wall templeThis rustic lobby looks like it has been carved out of the depths of the earth, thanks to the peanut palette and the subtle brick wall on the far right. Look ahead, and you’ll see a section of the wall covered in wall niches, each holding a golden bell. Just below, stands a stone idol, presiding over the area. The bell decor serves as a scaled-down replication of a temple space and also gives pace to the knocked-back vibe of the room.
Contemporary worship alcoveThis puja corner has been worked into a well-planned wall niche. The earthy palette of this alcove is enhanced by recessed lighting. The central geometric floral motif is mirrored in the latticework frame as well as the white panel that forms the backdrop. The illumination accentuates the embossed design on the wall panel through a lighting technique called wall grazing. Also, notice how just one magnificent idol makes for a compelling focal point.
Sleek puja consoleThis minimalist corner exudes a soothing ambience. With the only token of worship being a beautiful pair of idols at the far end of the room, twin spotlights seek to keep the focus on the puja platform. A marble-topped stool sits in the centre of the room, serving as a pleasing centrepiece. Tip: Creating a small bespoke puja space with a retractable screen is a good option if you do not have any spare corners in your home.
Spiritual decor and accentsSpiritual decor and accents can infuse a space with tranquility and quietude. This New York loft demonstrates how. The breezy space is peppered with ethnic touches that complement the sacred display in the far left corner. The line of idols on the window sill form an understated shrine that works equally well as a design statement. The vibrant mirrored cushions, the sun-kissed jhoola and the Kashmiri rugs all play to the decor scheme. Tip: Line a spare window sill with stone to create a simple, safe and non-flammable shrine.

The living room is on the right of the lobby, an expansive space with large windows that look out to the verdant outdoors, filling the room with light and allowing the metallic details to glisten. The space is divided into three seating areas, with larger-than-life pieces. This room has a light-toned wallpaper “because we didn’t want to take away from the vibrant furniture. The centre table is a massive 6 x 6 foot one, made of Venetian mirrors – it creates a huge impact when you enter the living room. It is inlaid with semi-precious stones. The sofas in mirror work also show silver embroidery on them,” Sawhaney says. A beautiful Kashmiri carpet ornaments the ceiling, highlighting the opulent chandelier hanging from it. The gold-and-pink artwork on the right has been designed by Sawhaney, and is printed on canvas. All the works of art were specially customised for this house.
