Blue Note 2129-30 by Benjamin Moore Rich blue wall paint helps tie together a range of styles in this New York City townhouse. “This was a really successful color — it made a great background for our mix of antiques, vintage and modern pieces. It really served to anchor them in a unifying surrounding,” architect and interior designer Joan Dineen says. “I think it is really unique in that ability.” The designer also notes that the color can change along with the time of day. “It also responds beautifully to changes in light,” she says. “At night it is quite restrained and elegant, and daylight brings out its exuberance — we love it!”

Hale Navy 2063-10 by Benjamin Moore Preppy and classic, navy blue was an apt choice for this New England bedroom. “Hale Navy is a classic, true navy blue — it can ground a moody space or highlight a more poppy, energetic space,” interior designer Tyler Karu says. “It looks especially beautiful with clean, white elements or various wood tones.”

Hague Blue No. 30 by Farrow & Ball In this Los Angeles bedroom, indigo walls inspire a deep slumber. “I love to employ deeper, darker colors on bedroom walls to establish mood and coziness,” interior designer Lindsay Pennington says. “Hague Blue is an inky indigo that is neither too green nor too purple. Though it’s quite dark, it’s not oppressive, as the white bedding, mirrored nightstands, crystal lamps and metallic ceiling reflect the light pouring in from the windows.” The designer also notes that this paint is timeless and that in addition to walls, it also works beautifully on cabinetry and millwork.

Green and Tan Walls + Wood Accents If you’ve got minimal furnishings and a water view to celebrate, you can’t go wrong with colors that complement that body of blue: green and brown. Try a super-pale green for an accent wall, then look to light tan walls and any opportunity to introduce wood. The floor and ceiling are good bets, but wood furniture will also get the job done.

Tan and White Walls + Beige and Wood Furnishings The previous examples might strike some of you as a bit too adventurous. Worry not. If you’re looking for a traditional, relaxing vibe, you can’t go wrong with this classic neutral scheme. Go with beige walls capped by white trim and white millwork. For seating, choose comfortable pieces in off-white or beige, and stick to woods with a rich, dark stain for things like tables and shelves.

White Walls + Wood Trim + Black Details + Brown Furnishings For a warm, modern Southwestern look, go for crisp white walls with warm wood trim. Then haul in brown leather furnishings, add some straight black details for a bit of sophistication and create balance with a few blue accessories.

Blue Walls + White Trim + Gold Accents To add a bit of playful character to a traditional-style room, consider painting your walls light blue with white trim, then bring in plenty of gold accents by way of fixtures and accessories, like a mirror. Mix in some wood pieces and a few additional blue accessories, and you’ll have a solid foundation for a laid-back yet fully decorated space.
