2014...Main Floor trim: We have decided to use distressed knotty alder for the trim, probably distressed, stained and glazed for depth.

20014...We can create box beams like this using hand-distressed stock lumber. We only need 3-4 of them spanning the width of the great room.

Stained common wood: Here is a mix of "Barnwood" and "Mocha" color mixed to give an inconsistent barn wood look.

Stained common wood test: It seems pretty easy to duplicate the overall tone of aged barnwood. This photo shows 4 common woods from Home Depot (Pine, Fir, Alder, Cedar) beat up a bit and stained with Olympic Semi-transparent "Barnwood" color. I'm also going to experiment with distressing via sandblasting and mechanical vertical surface grating. Note: Rough cedar (like they use on fences) most closely resembles the texture of actual reclaimed barnwood.

20014 Mannington Historic Oak Laminate (color: Ash or Timber) This is the ideal floor for the main level of our cabin. The actual floor seems a bit more gray than this photo. It has some grey and mocha tones as part a reclaimed barnwood motif. It's very rugged looking and very forgiving of wear and tear and dust. Of all the flooring I have seen this particular style and color will be the easiest to maintain.

I really love the overall color tone of this room: reclaimed barnwood theme, beige walls and wood clad ceiling with accent beams. We have to be careful no to feature "too much" reclaimed wood or it feels a bit dark. This is intended to be a happy place.

20014...Featured west wall in great room: Reclaimed barnwood clad wall with bookshelves. We also discussed making that entire west wall like this rather than just the far north section. That part is mostly doorways, bath, mudroom, stairwell.

20014... The door from the mudroom to the kitchen is a prominent doorway to use a sliding barn door for ambiance. Door to master and basement will also be prominent... suggest stain grade wood.

2014... Fireplace on wall of windows. Our initial plan calls for this configuration with the tv screen above a heavy timber mantle. I am worried that placing a TV above a fireplace that is engineered to heat the whole main floor may be problematic (too hot) for the TV

Main Floor Trim Detail: Reclaimed barn-wood cladding on window and door frames, 8" baseboard. Off-white or light beige paint color.

Mudroom/laundry room: all wear surfaces clad with rustic reclaimed wood so it can withstand daily wear of kids coming in and out in a mountain environment.

Idea: We can create beams wrapped in stained hardi board

20014...Kitchen Table: I think we should make two identical 72' x 36" tables just like this to be set end to end to make a 12' long table in the interior dining area. (Unless we can fine pre-built similar tables at great prices)...Screened Porch Table: Same table but 8'x36". This gives us the flexibility of moving tables around and positioning indoors or outdoors for certain size gatherings.

Reclaimed barn-wood wainscoting in selected areas

The seating side of a kitchen island is a place that will get heavy abuse. It's good candidate to strategically locate rustic materials such as corrugated steel or reclaimed barnwood

Strategic use of galvanized steel as an interior design element and wall protection. (The exterior will have a wrap-around porch with a galvanized steel roof).

Occasional "featured" walls clad (floor to ceiling) with reclaimed barnwood

Adult bedrooms: Simple plank barn-wood headboards attached to the walls. It would look similar to this.

Idea: Corrugated metal accent wall for an area that takes significant wear like a wall in a mudroom, bathroom or bunk room... functional and adds rustic ambiance.

Covered porch. Ours would be similar in size and view. This will visually (and actually) extend the size of the family gathering space on the main floor.

I love the feel of this rustic timber and woodwork motif. To me, its the best way to fortify the interior for the activity of grandchildren (and their friends someday).

Interior barnwood to the max. There are techniques to artificially "age" new wood to look like barnwood.
