Switch off your appliances - According to Your Energy Savings, leaving your appliances and electronics – such as your TV(s), computer, printer and gaming consoles – on standby mode when not in use accounts for approximately 10 per cent of your household electricity usage. A simple solution to this energy-guzzling problem is to flick your gadgets off at the switch once you’re finished using them. While this may mean that your devices take a little longer to power up, the environment (and your bank balance) will thank you in the long run.
The driving impetus for this Tarrytown residence was centered around creating a green and sustainable home. The owner-Architect collaboration was unique for this project in that the client was also the builder with a keen desire to incorporate LEED-centric principles to the design process. The original home on the lot was deconstructed piece by piece, with 95% of the materials either reused or reclaimed.
Ancient electronic gadgets - There’s no point holding onto old-school gadgets like VCRs, boxy analog TVs, outdated desktop computers and brick-like mobile phones if they’re broken or have been cast aside for newer models and are just taking up precious real estate in your home. Before you say it, no, you probably won’t ever use them again, nor will they ever become collector’s items, so it’s time to let them go.
Keep things in order with drawer organisers - Cluttered drawers can seriously mess with the functionality and efficiency of a kitchen. If your drawers are overflowing with utensils, gadgets and other cooking tools, empty everything onto your kitchen bench and bin equipment that’s old (yes, rusty vegetable peeler, we’re looking at you), broken or just plain unnecessary (come on now, do you really need that cherry and olive pitter?).
Pull-out desk drawer. This subtle home office looks more like a built-in bureau than a desk area. But when it's time to pay the monthly bills, the false front drawer reveals an entire working surface. This application's beauty is twofold: When it's not in use, everything resting on top of the drawer can stay in the same spot when you push it back.
Keep your kitchen design fresh, clean, neat and tidy by keeping unnecessary items off your benchtops – this goes back to my first point of carefully planning to ensure you have a home for everything. Strip back the contents of your kitchen cabinets to their bare essentials and you will have mastered this principle. You’ll be surprised how much space you can free up, and how much clearer your mind will feel if you get rid of all those appliances and gadgets you have never used or have retired to the back of your cupboard for the day you ‘might’ need them.
Organize warranties and manuals. Get any new gadgets or appliances over the past year? Take a few moments to flip through that stack of old manuals and warranties, tossing out paperwork for stuff you no longer own — and remember to send in forms to activate new warranties as needed. Store everything together in one binder or document box.

DO turn your garage into living space - If your garage is home to half-empty tins of paint, DIY gear and clapped-out old gadgets, it’s time to realise its potential. Talk to estate agents to find out what buyers in your area want most – living space, another bedroom, an office – and give them exactly that.
Late-night use can also encourage cognitive stimulation, the exact opposite of what you want when you’re trying to wind down. SOLUTION: Ideally, you should remove all electronic gadgets from the bedroom, but if that’s not possible then at least pack them away into a drawer or switch them off before you snooze.
However, try to turn off as much as possible to avoid the risk of an electrical fire. You’ll also reduce your bills slightly, as even things left on standby will eat up energy. Make sure all your laptops and gadgets are out of sight, too. Avoid having anything on display that could potentially tempt a burglar.

Not to worry, appliance companies are coming out with more fun small appliances and gadgets to make cooking more enjoyable every day. 8. Cutting-edge organization. The kitchens of today are nothing like the ones from even 10 years ago, when you would consider yourself lucky to find roll-out shelves in cabinet. Today there is every form of organizational gadget, including magic corners, pull-out pantries, spice organizers and waste bin and recycling organizers, just to name a few. 9.
Before we dive deeply into each topic, though, let’s do an overview of the five components you’ll need to make off-grid living feasible. 1. A Conservation Mind-set The advantages of an unlimited supply of electricity and water are numerous. Charging our many gadgets, changing the temperature of a room with the push of a button and taking long, hot showers are luxuries that many of us have come to expect. We pay our monthly bills (sometimes with an audible grumble) and never give a second thought about where our resources originate or if they will run out.
So while the corner is maximised, it’s at the expense of floorspace. Some clients really love gadgets, and if you’re that way inclined, this would be appealing. TIP: When it comes to longevity, I recommend as few gadgets and moving parts as possible, where there is a solid alternative. Keeping it simple with good design is preferable.
But before we get into computer software, 3-D fly-through models and photorealistic renderings, there are a few fundamental qualities an architect must have, because even the most advanced software or gadget can't compensate for their absence. Rock a glass-fronted unit - Glass-doored cabinets on walls work brilliantly as a mix-and-match option – here, combined with traditional wooden base units, they add a relaxed, eclectic feel. Save your prettier glassware and crockery for the display cabinets, and use your base units to store more workaday gadgets, saucepans and tupperware.
Design-wise, use the same cabinet colour and worktop material for your work space so it will seamlessly blend with the rest of your kitchen. Keep clutter at bay and save some work surface by using pullout shelves and drawers for your printer, other office gadgets, and documents. Allocate a charging drawer The kitchen is often the social hub of the home, and the place where we tend to congregate. Into this informal atmosphere come our gadgets, too. However, it’s not always the safest environment for them, with sinks and hot plates, steam and heavy pots.
Brighten up a ceiling - An energising blast of crimson might just be the perfect addition to an all-white home office, helping to keep the occupants on the ball until clocking-off time. A block of full-on red might be a tad too distracting, but picking out the beams, as in this room, or painting stripes adds just the right accent overhead.
Integrated technology - Homes are getting smarter and 2015 looks set to build on developments in technology. But as homes get smarter, so do owners and the new year could see increasingly clever ways of integrating technology, such as smart TVs, kitchen gadgets and energy meters, into home design.

In a recent Houzz discussion about the worst home gadget, users pretty much echoed my dilemma. Popcorn makers, ice cream makers, waffle makers, rice makers (think before buying something with the word “maker” in it, by the way) — they all get used once and end up collecting dust in a cabinet.
