Dutch doors. These doors are special because you can open the top half and fantasize that a talking horse will come by and stick his head in. Or at least that’s what draws me to Dutch doors.

A place for everything. The first step in the design process here was taking inventory of all the sweatshirts, shoes, bags, outerwear and devices in need of charging stations that were bursting the seams of the existing mudroom shared by a family of six. Then the cubbies required to hold all of that were planned out. Notice the details befitting the 18th-century farmhouse, such as the antique lanterns and bench and the ceiling beams. Paint: Brandon Beige, Benjamin Moore; ceiling: unpainted plaster, Imperial; floor: wide-board common-grade oak; rug: Dash & Albert; antique lanterns, bench, coffee bin: Charles Haver Antiques

A smashing light fixture. In this Montana bunkhouse, the designers customized a large wire cage fixture to greet all who enter with rustic style. Aboriginal artwork and an extendable bench complete the small space. See the rest of this bunkhouse Bench: 14th Street Antiques & Interiors

Console table. An antique workbench serves as a rustic console table in the foyer of this California wine country home. The mix of metal and weathered wood creates a welcoming feel. See the rest of this home Console table: Garden Court Antiques; mirror: custom; light fixture: Urban Electric; striped leather rug: Holland & Sherry; wall treatment: integral-color plaster inspired by Farrow & Ball’s Skimming Stone, TCB Plaster Artisans

A mirror. This dresser-like cabinetry topped with a mirror is an ingenious touch, providing a spot to check lipstick and hair and enough space to dig through one’s bag for a comb or makeup. Separate spaces for kids and adults keep the family organized, while a French door lets in light. A slate floor and three-quarter-height painted wood wainscoting stand up to wear and tear. Cabinets: Signature Cabinetry; lighting: Hinkley Lighting; hardware: Top Knobs Hardware; lock sets: Emtek; doors: Pella Doors

A bench. A place to perch and put on or remove shoes is always welcome in an entry, and it helps keep dirt from being tracked inside. These custom built-ins create a cozy niche for the bench, while a graphic poster behind it brings style. Poster (similar): American Morse Code, One Kings Lane; bench: Gabby Home; cabinets: Palmetto Cabinet Studio in sand with a brushed black glaze

Mudroom-foyer mash-up. Because this mountain home didn’t have a mudroom, designer Melissa Warner Rothblum made the most of the entry hall, creating a sort of mudroom-foyer hybrid. A slim bench provides a spot to sit and take off snowy boots, while closets offer space to put things away. Brick floors and a rug add durable yet stylish touches. See the rest of this house Front door paint: Midnight Blue, Benjamin Moore; wall paint: Off White, Farrow & Ball; light: Eufala old iron pendant, Currey & Co.; bench: Barclay Butera
