Since the back wall has a beam, this view from the living room is not possible. IDEA: make the cabinet come out a little bit, add a light and a frosted glass, so we see a lit cabinet from the other room. Maybe better than just a solid looking cabinet.

Photo of microwave drawer. Looks ok -- but cuts the room up -- cabinets do not look as even, especially in my small kitchen. Not sure if it looks better if it was right next to the dishwasher.
Pillar as a shelf that picks up the wood from the main room. - not bad. But I do not like the wood they chose -- too grainy.
