White works beautifully with gray, as evidenced by the silvery backsplash in this Minnesota kitchen (made from Encore 3- by 6-inch silver ceramic tiles). The custom cabinetry — including the island, with its artfully turned legs — is painted in Benjamin Moore’s Simply White. Honed Calacatta marble covers the counters and island top, while the warm wood floors (by Stang-Lund) are walnut with a hard-wax-oil finish.
Gleaming white Carrara marble counters take center stage here. But this kitchen is as functional as it is glamorous. There are seven seats at the peninsula and the island, so the cook never has to feel left out of the party. Other nice touches: the discreet wine fridge, the built-in paper towel holder next to the sink, the old-fashioned station clock, and bell-jar pendant lights. The maple cabinets are by Wood-Mode and are painted Nordic White.
Tip: Running the top row of cabinets up to the ceiling eliminates the dust that usually accumulates atop upper cabinets and creates additional storage and display space.

All four sides have purposes. The seating area opens up to 12-inch-deep cabinets for seasonal storage. The end closest to the fridge has a three-shelf bookcase for cookbooks. The opposite end is equipped with full-height base storage for blenders and other small appliances. Vanderweil’s mother also painted these two watercolors, titled “Girls with Sunglasses,” in the breakfast nook. The custom L-shaped banquette is made with white vinyl for easy cleanup.
Backsplash tile: Classic Tile and Stone
They replaced the kitchen’s old dark cabinetry with custom white ones designed by Hardaway Associates and built by Vermont woodworkers Michaud and Foley. The dark wood floors and island are new. Sleek Lucite bar stools and a crystal chandelier complete the space.

No matter who's sitting, jumping or spilling on its benches, a banquette can still look fabulous long-term if it's upholstered in a wipeable, nonstaining fabric like this vinyl from Robert Allen Design. Other kidproof fabrics to consider are microfiber and outdoor fabrics from companies such as Sunbrella.

Green. I have long admired the shade of green in this kitchen. I think it's perfectly paired with the white cabinets and does a good job of adding warmth. This mellow shade of green is Farrow & Ball's Ball Green 25.
White. White is really one of the most asked-about colors. The perfect white is sought after for cabinets and trim. Undertones in white paint are important and can really shift a palette. My favorite pure white is White Dove OC-17, by Benjamin Moore. This white, shown here in this gorgeous kitchen, is crisp with no undertones. It looks great against any color.
Fireclay is a clay-based material that's coated with a heavy glaze; together they're fired in a kiln at a superhigh temperature (upward of 1,800 degrees) to create a durable and nonporous material that's ideal for sinks.
