This is kind of what I envision - same roof ridge direction as what we have, but steeper pitch to allow for attic room. Same bedroom box projecting forward but with peaked roof rather than hipped. Maybe an eyebrow window too - positioned like these upper windows.

I imagine this to be the side/back view - perhaps a slightly lower roof pitch so that the peak is not so high?

Maybe the roof lines could be less steep for a smaller upper space?

could this be a 1.5 story (attic room) house rather than a full two story? see side view - roof would need to have a less steep pitch

home doesn't look overly tall and imposing. attic room is just "tucked in" up there.

I hadn't thought of bidirectional stairs at the entryway of the house. Perhaps we could have an entryway something like this?

Cottage Charm - this layout might work for our kitchen and an attic room. The pass thru would be into our current dining; we would close the wall to make a space for stove. see stairs in other picture - would be about where the fireplace is currently.
