SR: For the kids bathroom upstairs, I've got room for a nice wide double sink, but I might do more of a trough sink like this if you don't mind. So, no one has to be up agains the wall. And do you want open linen storage like this or more closed? /// LH: trough sink is totally fine. I think I’d prefer the big storage to be closed, but a small open shelf is nice. SR: Got it, thanks!
SR: You had mentioned needing a place for an ironing board. Do you want something built into the cabinetry like this or just a place to hang the ironing board? / / / LH: Either works. I just use a petit travel ironing board right now, it’s about half-sized. SR: Got it, thank you. I won't make it a priority to take up cabinet space then, but I'll try to find a spot for it to be stored or hung.
SR: I'm wondering if you might like a darker floor like this in the laundry/back entry area. Similar to your front entry, does it do a good job of hiding dirt from shoes, etc. / / / LH: I have leftover slate tile from the entryway. I think the grout in my entryway is a bit bright (I think I’m going to stain it a bit darker), but the stone looks nice. SR: Do you think you have enough for the laundry room?
SR: What do you think you want for the flooring in the laundry room/mud room area? If we have some wood cabinets, maybe a tile floor, so it doesn't suffer from getting wet? Or would you prefer to try to match wood from the rest of the hallway into that space? / / / LH: Tile sounds good to me, the heartier the better.
LH: built-in storage on right. SR: I'm assuming you might want something like this in that back door stairway space for shoes and coats? / / / LH: Actually, I was thinking of the way the cabinet and drawers are set into the wall. I'm a big fan of things that can close. Having a little space for shoes and jackets (hooks and a little waterproof place for shoes, for example) SR: So you're thinking something like this more for the front door area, correct? / / / LH: yes, I'm hoping to put some kind of nice looking mudroom thing
SR: We might have enough room for a small bench like this on the stairwall side. Do you want the stairs to be open railing like this part of the way up? Feels nice to have it a bit more open in the space, right? / / / Yes, any opportunities to make things feel more open. A bench there isn't a priority, it would undoubtedly become the place that piles of clean laundry would go to die before the kids take it upstairs *sigh* SR: understood. LOL!
SR: Our landing will look something like this with the windows on the side and a window where the bookcase is as well. This again, is not a prescribed treatment, just to show the orientation of the situation. Thoughts? / / / LH: I love the low landing with windows on two sides, that's great. Between this and the next picture, are you imagining a triangular landing to get more steps in, or the rectangular landing? SR: Rectangular landing. / / / LH: nice, I like the rectangular landing.
LH: stairway partition wall SR: I see this in your images...is this something you like to incorporate into the space or do you feel like you need that wall along the staircase, maybe some hooks could go on that wall? Not that hooks couldn't go on the wood slats too, I suppose. / / / LH: I like the idea of the slats as a way to bring a little light into the basement, and I like the visual interest in the lines. I really like the MCM use of partitions to separate spaces, but all other things being equal, function is more important than form. SR: understood
SR: This is the layout so far. Just so you can see the space limitations and why I'm asking about the priorities for this space. / / / LH: This is great, and looks like I'd be able to steal what is now the bedroom closet for the other bedroom. SR: Correct! /
SR: Something like this would fit well into that space but then you don't have any mudroom storage. Priorities? / / / My laundry 'room' needs are a surface for folding, a place to stash an ironing board and iron, a place for detergents and stain removers, a little place to hang things that need air dried or to put hanging clothes before they get put away. A mini sink is lovely, but not absolutely necessary. Any storage left above or below the folding surface would absolutely get filled with stuff. SR: Ok, storage galore, got it.
SR: In the storage area next to the washer and dryer, in the new back hallway with the stairs, do you want more of an open drop zone like this? Or move storage for laundry items and a laundry sink? We don't have a ton of room there so we have to be precious with the space. / / / LH: I would prefer the storage, especially if it can look absolutely uncluttered when the cabinet doors are closed. We will still use the front door as our primary entrance, so I'll need to put mudroom type stuff in that entryway. SR: Got it thank you.
LH: Nook SR: We don't have the head height to do this on the main level, but we can do this in the basement if you're interested in that. / / / LH: Oh, that would be cool! SR: Ok...we'll see what might work. Thank you.
