5. A low-profile toilet and extended counter combination. Interior designer Bridget McMullin deems this a “hotel trick,” a clever move she picked up from hotel bathrooms. The low-profile toilet leaves enough space to extend the counter into a shelf above it. By extending the counter over the back of the toilet you gain more surface for a box of tissues, an orchid or other items you want to keep handy. With its location right next to the shower, as you see here, it can also serve the shower by holding shampoo, conditioner, shave gel and more. This is especially useful in a shared bathroom or vacation home where you have limited space inside the shower stall.
Determine whether you want the rollers on the interior or exterior of the door. The placement will affect the overlap between the doors and walls when closed, so consider the use of the door as a guide when deciding. Door pulls are an essential part of barn door functionality as well as aesthetics. A door that is meant to be actively opened and closed should have a substantial enough pull that the door can be easily moved. If you are looking for a statement maker, know that the larger your hardware, the more it will stand out.
Harmonize and be happy. Instead of using traditional doors for this closet, designer Marie Burgos wanted to harmonize them with the shoji screens she used for the bedroom door."The whole idea was to keep the space peaceful and harmonious, with a hint of Asian style, to create a real retreat that would remind the owner of his own tropical island," she says. "I used feng shui throughout the whole home, and the bedroom is no exception."
1. Appliances, Sinks and LightingI recommend that clients select appliances and sinks during the preliminary design phase, which often comes before selecting the rest of the finishes and fixtures. This is so the plans can reflect the proper sizes, which will in turn affect the cabinetry layout. Also, I recommend picking the type and amount of lighting fixtures during this phase: cans, semi-flush mounts, how many pendants over the island and so on, in order to complete the lighting plans so the contractor to provide estimates. Most people haven't actually picked what style pendant light yet, but at least the decision about number is done. It's also time to decide whether or not you want a prep sink in addition to your main sink. At this point, by the way, it's fine if you decide to change from a 36-inch range to a cooktop and wall oven. By the time you get to final construction documents or order cabinets, however, these decisions must be finalized. The nice thing is that there are now a few big decisions that you can check off your list.
AFTER: Designer Michelle Ruber and writer Becky Harris decided to call the style of this kitchen “eco-modern farmhouse,” thanks to its mashup of elements. The Shaker-style cabinets, steel drawer pulls and subway-like tiles recall farmhouse style, while the stainless steel appliances, color palette and clean lines look more modern. The homeowners used local vendors and materials for an environmentally friendly design. A skylight brings in extra light, while taller cabinets enhance the storage space. 8. Corner ShelvesUsing open shelves for some of the uppers makes for an attractive kitchen feature and lets you perch lunch plates, breakfast bowls, recipe books and other daily essentials within easy reach. Using shelves instead of a corner cabinet allows you to avoid dark corners and frames your items to create an attractive display with architectural appeal.
KitchenGenerous wood detailing. You won’t believe this kitchen transformation when you see it. One of my favorite design decisions is that the island and refrigerator surround have been wrapped in rich, amber-colored wood to bring some warmth to the blue cabinets and slate-colored floor tile.See this kitchen makeover
While black is hardly new, we do find more and more clients being bold and asking to include some elements of black to bring a stately appeal to their kitchen, especially when used as part of a two-tone look.Using black on the lower cabinets, or a pantry area, paired with black entry doors and even some modern black fixtures gives a room an effortless, fashionable look.

Don't forget the bathroom. After people have a couple of cocktails, a candlelit bathroom is helpful. This bathroom is prepared with built-in candle shelves.
