Replacement windows Installation Methods

I am trying to find out which is a better way to install replacement windows. One window installer will do the box trim method. The other installer will trim back the drywall and trim back the window sill. He said this method would require less caulking thus less chance of water penetrating behind the window They both said that the replacement windows will stick out several inches from the window frame.

I am trying to get any opinions on the advantages and disadvantages of different installation methods that each installer wants to use.

Mechanical flashing waterproofs windows; caulk is a supplement.

Huh? What do your current windows look like? Pictures? What window are they proposing to use?

The energy efficient bulbs shown in the above photo suck the light is awful and they butn out quite often, if you want real energy savings go with LEDs they come in warm or cool light and you probably never have to chang a bulb as long as you live. They come in all kinds of wattages and can be retrofitted in almost any fixture.

Keya, glad you decided to take the one reader's idea about moving the armoires in front of windows that you don't need and giving the bed a wall of its own! And, yes, you can have Roman shades on one wall and layered drapes on the other. When I had drapes made for my tall sitting room windows/doors, I had them use the same fabric for the Roman shades for the smaller windows on the other wall. For me personally, in these older Indian homes with all the odd nooks and niches in the walls, perhaps it would be more soothing to have a light/med tone paint on the walls that blends with the drapes/blinds for an 'uninterrupted' look, and I would use the same color on ceiling and beams. (but that is just my thought) I would start the process with a large carpet with your favorite colors, then choose your Bedcover & cushions, then your wall paint and fabric for drapes/blinds ..Not certain what style you like, but if you really like a particular Ethnic bedcover fabric, you can always have them stitched into curtains or Roman shades too. Can't wait to see the "After" pics!

Hi Nithin, Thank you for your reply. installing the POP curling would mean I will loose the existing shape yeah? little worried that I would loose height in the room. The structure used to be a window which I broke down to make way to a balcony. In a few days the structure will be replaced with sliding glass doors. Any recommendations on color as well? thanks again.

I have been struggling as a homeowner who is off on medical leave with watching a 3 day install by one of the 2 big box retailers on 2 59 x 24 vinyl Pella casement windows. I found the 50 foot roll of Pella Smart Flash in the garage after installation then realized they used the cheap red house wrap tape to seal the nailing fins then put the 4 inch cedar trim in and not have the proper caulk (so the cedar is not caulked 5 days after start of install and we have had thunderstorms every day but one it will rain 3 more days). I called em on it and got red tape is fine, then me demanding otherwise to "it was temporary we where going to rip all the 4 inch cedar trim boards we placed around the windows off". Mind you they cut back 12 inch Skirl cedar siding to get at the fins but then why where they going to caulk it if it was temporary. So they put the windows in and nailed em over the OSB not replacing the 4 inches of barrier when they cut thru the felt then placed the red tape over the fins and OSB). I think they should have set the saw shallower not to cut the felt? Do I need them to pull the windows out to put splice in some type of 4" barrier as I told them they should? They agreed pull the 4 inch trim off anyway to replace the "temporary" tape. Should I ask for new cedar trim boards as they will take em off with nail holes and possibly break? What about the rain getting under/in the uncaulked cedar trim(the cuts are tight thank goodness) its going to rain all week is it ok the uncaulked trim boards are getting steady rain for a almost a solid week? They showed up asking if they can use my ladder ok no longer, they did not have caulk asking me if I was going to caulk the second story windows(I am on crutches), having to reorder interior oak they did not have enough, did not have a vacuumn asked to use mine, and here i sit with windows as the rain pours down the west side of my house and windows not caulked waiting for my hip to heal. Thanks for the help! Just really disappointed in the whole job and one window does not even close easy at all I have to jack around with the crank, he said the trim was too tight he will cut it back.

Windows are ordered knowing your wall framing depth, siding thickness and interior finish so unsure why they would stick out? Sounds very strange to me.

I am a home owner that is trying to get Vinyl replacement windows for my residential home. The current windows have the cheapest windows that the builder could find. My current windows fit flush on the outside and do not stick out.

How many ways are there to install residential windows? Or better yet what is the correct way to install residential windows. I would think that the windows manufacturers would have research this and came up with one specific way for installing their windows. What a concept!

Depending on your exterior finish you can get windows that are recessed like in a brick home, you can have windows with brick mold that goes ontop of siding, you can have windows with a J-channel to accommodate vinyl siding, you can have windows built for a 2x4 wall or 2x6 wall or in some areas 2x6 with extra insulation because of a colder climate etc. etc etc. No house is the same therefore all windows are made to accommodate what you have. The window itself can be standard HOWEVER what is built around the window is not. So again if you want more help maybe you can help us and give us some pictures as well as what the window companies are offering.

Hire a reputable company that has a focus on replacement windows and you will be fine. if you hire some local ”pick up truck guy” that does everything, then I would be careful. With a reputable company, you dont need to be nearly as inquisitive. installing sheetrock to sheetock is also acceptable as long as they spray foam the outside perimeter.

I think you need to find someone who knows what windows and I have no clue why they stick out . We did all vinyl replacement windows in a 1905 house and they still fit the sapce no sticking out. Go to a good window shop and get good advice.
