It's a good idea to have a ceiling light in a bedroom for cleaning and emergencies. If you don't want to have a light you will have to have a removeable cap on the junction box or you will have to remove that wire altogether, you can't just bury the wire in the ceiling by patching the hole.

8.75 would be fine to it's only a difference of 3 inches.. Are you going to do up lighting? In the second picture that ceiling is really set up for it and that opens up a lot of options on your finishes and textures on the ceiling.
