Just check the beam details and , don't try to drill.at bottom of beam and don't have 2 holes beside to each other, give a gap of minimum 4 inches ...and go for core cutting

Isn't core cutting going to compromise the strength of the beam further?

MJ, if you have an alternative feasible don't do a hole.

If not then it can't be avoided - preferably get an opinion from an location specific architect/engineer. Usually for a single hole it is not a big concern.
