Unpolished, unfinished wood planks, glass wool (use as last resort), or nylon fiber are three alternatives which can be used to seal gaps. Thickness of floors, walls also matters for sound to radiate through. Cheapest alternative is of course paper as the best sound absorbent paper. Unlaminated newsprint is the best.

Hi Van Dana, If you simply want to work over it, how about: - decorating the walls with fun shelves - the entire space including the beam. How and the choice of shelves will be what would help successfully cover this up - use wall decals. You can even use a big mirror or mirror decals on this portion of the ju tting beam -use patterned wallpapers. You can give a separate one to the beam -decorate with photos/art -for the other beam you can think of light hanging decorations like a sun catcher beads curtain. Place the cabinet against a different wall and not beneath that beam? There's no need for a false ceiling, instead you could do a simple cornice to soften and enliven the hard line where walls meet ceiling. You could apply the same cornice to the short, hard line where the lower side of the beam meets either wall. Keep it simple. You could even apply cornice ONLY to where the lower edge of the beam meets the walls. It softens the heavy horizontal impression, allowing it to pretend to be a very slight arch. If you're going to repaint, consider using slightly different shades for wall and ceiling. An alternate to the cornice is a shallow horizontal ledge to hold LED cove uplighting along all the walls, at the same height as the lower edge of the beam. If you do this in wood, clad the lower surface of the beam to make a feature of it and to match the cove lighting ledges. Keep the design simple. Thanks for both of your responses CUBSpaces team and Shweta from Shades studio. It really gives a clarity about possible consequences. I am now doubt free about changing whole things in Bathroom as it will be interconnected. However will appreciate your opinion on few things: 1. Kitchen wall tiles: I have those from countertop height to roof(almost area of 6X15 feet) which are good and not hollow. I changed countertop 5 years back without any damage to these tiles. It might cost me another 10-15 K, but I feel the whole process and quantity of wasting old good tiles makes me little sad. 2. kitchen countertop: Made new around 5 years back. I don't expect to get it all intact. But large pieces can be cut and can be used as top for other freestanding structures like dishwasher, front load washer, heighten base cabinets, etc. 3. Plywood: I don't mind giving enough labour charges for old sheets recycle. I am planning to use doors, loose sheets(like kept on bed frame of settee frame.) or parts of big frames like settee. I am keen on reducing waste than to save money. You can see various DIY ideas by western people, who remove or sand laminates and re-paint furniture, or carefully remove hollow tiles and re-attach them. Some are also re-painting ceramic tiles. I am just asking myself: Are we creating more and more waste by use and throw approach every 10-15 years, just because we can afford it?
