Need to redo our family room and dining area. This is one open space connecting kitchen as well. Its a great room with a cathedral ceiling, currently wall color is sage with white trim and ceiling. This color is thruout the whole room, including the kitchen. The mantle of the fireplace is reclaimed black walnut. FYI, the bird cage is not normally in front of the fireplace. I really want to add more family photos, though they are not professionally done.

I'll take any and all ideas for paint colors, decor change.

I want to add more color to the room, change the overall wall color.

Hard to respond to your request unless we know what you're attempting to achieve. What's bugging you about the current look? Do you want to go more modern? Transitional? Or just a more up-to-date traditional look? Have you started an idea book here on Houzz to pull photos you like? Give us a place to start; this is a bit too open-ended.

I want to add more color to the room, change the overall wall color. It feels too bland to me. I wish to update the look, mix up the traditional with something else; mediterranean maybe. We have a lot of shade so the room is dark. I also feel that I'm not taking advantage of all the wall space I have. I have not started an idea book for this but that is a great idea, I will do that, thank you

I think they mean 5 rooms, not 5 bedrooms.....one master bedroom and 2 bedrooms for children with twin beds or bunk beds in each. I lived in a 1,300 sq ft house for 2 yrs with my husband and 2 sons. My suggestion would be to have an open floor plan for the kitchen, dining area and family room in one large room. Add a bar in the kitchen for casual dining. Be sure to include storage in family room for toys, games, etc. Add a built in desk in eiher the kitchen or family room areas . The master bedroom and bath should be large enough to accomodate a queen size bed and if possible a sitting area (maybe a bay window large enough for for a small loveseat or a couple of comfortable chairs). I would recommend a large walkin shower but no tub for the master bath. Instead have a nice size tub/ shower combo in the hall bath. Too make your house feel larger, use neutral camel, beige, gold or grey paint and carpet through out the kitchen, dining area, family, hallways and hallbath. If you want to add color, limit it to 3 bedrooms. Hanging all your window treatments at ceiling height will make your rooms feel larger and taller.

Either go with a darker shade for your woodwork or a lighter shade for the woodwork than the wall colors. I would use either the same color for all rooms or at least within the same color family. Each room will look different if you paint them all the same anyway due to light, time, of day and your furnishings. I like to choose the very lightest shade on a particular color spectrum. In other word a white with a hint of color. The ceilings do with a soft white or an off white. If you plan to place the TV above the fireplace a darker color will look good as an accent on that wall. If you have a narrow room try a darker color on the smallest wall to balance the size of the room. If your rooms are large try a very dark brown or navy or maroon as an accent wall. Have fun painting. Remember, if you don't like it, it's just paint and paint is cheap.

Two matching mini-chandeliers could work, but you have a vent and other holes in the ceiling and would have to work around them. If you can enclose a couple of the holes, you could place each small chandelier an equal distance from the center of the ceiling as it corresponds to the center of the table. I would suggest a large, square framed mirror over the fireplace and a large tapestry or other form of wall art on the back wall. By having two chandeliers, the wall art could be seen between them instead of being blocked by a single light fixture.There is a lot of plain space, and white-painted bead board wainscoting could break up the large, plain space and bring a different texture and color to the room. A solid-color area rug inspired by a color in the wall art or tapestry could help tie the color scheme together.

#1 is the only one that works with your doorways. But I would rethink the sectional pieces which look too large. You will need at least a floor lamp. Your table/chairs looks narrow in relation to your sectional - is it to scale in the drawing? You may not have enough room. I would use a sofa against the wall and two chairs on either end facing toward each other.

Remove the window treatment for a start, which are outdated and are not letting in the light you need. I would remove all the accessories which are too busy and make the room look chaotic and cluttered. After you do this, perhaps you can repost photos of just the furniture in the room here so we can make good comments to achieve your look. There's a lot of cleaning equipment and misc. stuff that confuses the viewing.
