Emmarenes, I'm living abroad in India, and the only granites in my budget are the local ones. I was advised against the gray and white local ones because i was told that they would not hold up well in the kitchen. I could have gone with a black galaxy as well but i have that granite now and despise it because of the way it hides ants and bugs so well. we live in a tropical area and there are always critters here and there. My first choice was a Brazilian white granite but it was triple the price. This granite is called Shiva pink, so it has a pink salmon and gray look to it. Im really hoping I don't hate it once it's installed. The stoneyard was a 9 hour trip up and down and i was just pressured to make a choice after several undecided trips. And I'm getting new cabinets put in. but I think I can wait for them to put the slab before staining the wood. Thanks for that idea :)

If you are looking for fancy kitchen with good looks, go for good quality Quartz like AGL or Kalinga Quartz. It's a good alternate to granite but also is costlier. There is some negative reviews of Quartz/Corian tops due to low quality and unknown brands providing at cheap price. if you have budget constraint, then can opt of Granite.

Hello Janani, Granite is cheaper than Quartz. It is easily available. It can stand very high temperatures. Depending upon the color and coating it may be stain resistant. Once in a while it requires a repolish. Quartz comes in a lot of color variations, it is much harder than Granite and it is non porous so stain resistance wise it is better than granite. You should not keep 'very' hot vessels directly on quartz. It is made from recycled quartz so is more nature friendly than granite which needs to be quarried. I have used both with good results. The main difference between Quartz and Granite are 1) price, 2) colour range. Granite generally works out cheaper, because you can buy the exact quantity you require. Quartz comes in large slabs of specific sizes- standard size being roughly 10'-0" x 4'6", so there tends to be more wastage if you don't plan the cutting well. But Quartz is pretty and comes in a wide range of colours and can be re-buffed at a later date. Quartz also comes in various thicknesses- the most commonly used being .75" to about 1.25". And especially when you use dark wood cabinets in a kitchen or bathroom, beige and white counter tops work very well. Some people go even with coloured counter tops like blue, orange, yellow. Natural stone in light colours tend to be porous and stain easily, so I prefer to go with pure black which is safe.
