Will 10*20 deck be too narrow?

Our buildable area will allow the deck to be only 10 feet out from the house. It can be as wide as the house. We are thinking of putting a 10*20 deck. Will it be too narrow? If so we would need to skip the deck and put down a patio instead.

Tough to tell without a picture of some sort of the house and the yard.

Kinda depends on how you want to use the space. And, would a patio be wider? If you want space for multiple chairs/furniture in a row, sounds perfect. If you want groups of furniture, not so great.

I would break it up into various rooms, approximately 10 feet by 15 feet each, though a longer one with a long narrow (2 feet?) water feature against the wall and seating and plants in the center part would work. Plants on the wall, making it vertically green. A path leading from room to room should jog, so you cannot see straight through. Change the theme of rooms, large fancy pottery, an outdoor dining area, sunbathing area if possible.

softyjain, If the windows need to be replaced I recommend looking at fixed steel to maintain the narrow profile of the windows and small window lites. Using fixed instead of operating will be a cost savings if you don't need to open them. Another option for hanging from the ceiling is a decorative light or chandelier. As hatetoshop mentioned , moving the bed to the gap between two window is would be right choice. as in current placement you have windows above your head which does not help for a view and looks odd. you could place double curtain rod or use existing curtain rods and add additional sheer /thin curtains for additional privacy during day as well as light. In future you can add two bedside tables as well and some bedside lamps. In India we are still not used to lower lighting (floor lamps, table lamps with warm day light bulbs) but trust me,it will add new dimension to your bedroom. Also some wall art. example a well framed big size ( 2ft * 3ft) art poster above bed (cheap way to add life (I wont use word "Class" (find it too much)) . Also in future you can think about having a pair of bed sheet (to sleep on ) and bed cover/spread (a good quality cotton one) to cover the mattress during day. And a dhurrie runner would be a good addition as well. All above wont cost too much and maybe little bit investment in quality material can be good as well as u don't have to change these often and can be a long term solution.

I don't think the proportions sound very pleasing for a typical home deck. It will feel much more like a long balcony than a deck where folks can gather in a circle and have conversation. The two corners allow small conversation areas, but that is a lot of space between. If you have a great view then a row of rocking chairs or adirondack chairs will work great and feel good with room to walk behind them (like at a beach or mountain lodge). I would suggest a 10x12 where a small conversation area and maybe a grill could be created, but use the deck primarily as a transition to patio below. The patio can become the space where larger groups gather, the dinning table is set, and the fire pit is stoked. Pics are need for better advise. Good Luck

I think ten feet will seem cramped, but if you open up the other dimension it can ameliorate that feeling. I just put in recently an 11 1/2 foot patio cover at the back of the house where there were some heavy duty constraints about going deeper (silly things like trees and rocks and dragons), and the more we stewed over it the more it bothered us. We decided to go the full house width and it completely changed the entire gestalt of the project. It feels like we're in a nearly different place. Play with your plans, and ask people who are over to look at your sketches. You may find a better layout.
