cast stone mantel?

Anyone have experience with these? I am looking at something like this for my &*(^%*(& fireplace.

Here is my fireplace now:

I'm ok with doing away with the TV mount and the shelf. I'd like to keep the crown as is. I'm somewhat confused if something like that will work and if it will be pretty.

I'm painting the walls white, getting ivory slip covered couches, and probably a navy blue leather chair. And a new non-ugly light. This is a better view of the whole room.

I can't remember, were you having cushions made for the window boxes? That might be a nice place for one of the florals you liked

i think the cast would work with your stone faced fireplace

My sofas will be similar except slipcovered and a little lighter ivory...I ordered a TV armoire in a light blue color similar to those built ins..I am considering a blue ottoman as a coffee table...???

Thanks Patricia and cpaul! I hadn't thought about glass. And I guess I should specify that a fully modular kitchen would not withstand the climate lol. The doors and Windows in General are traditionally made of teak wood and do warp somewhat but it's not a huge issue, so I fiured if all I am dealing with in the kitchen is the cabinet door it shouldn't be too hard to maintain. I actually ended up finding a blog about someone living in the tropical Philippine weather and how they covered their concrete counter with cabinets. Here is the link if anyone is interested http://myphilippinelife.com/our-philippine-house-project-kitchen-cabinets/ I think it turned out quite nice :) . This was their starting and final result. there are more photos in the blog. They basically recommended some prefabricated cabinets and strong hinges and screws for the wood frame.

There is a lot of concerns when you're constructing a new floor and want to merge with the existing building. Please consult with your local architect for a contemporary look. Few things that needs to be incorporated : 1. Replace the overhangs with a contemporary shade structure. 2. Replace the traditional designs on balcony with SS and glass. Repeat on the new balconies 3. Incorporate ACP/ fibre cement panels throughout the facade. 4. Wooden paint / slats on the balcony roof 5. GFRC jaali on boundary wall alongwith stone cladding. 6. I think one issue is that the fireplace will either match the crown width or the inlay on the floor but not both. I don't know what your house looks like overall, but I think cast stone could be okay if the style is not too palatial.

Cast stone can be pricey, but it can look nice. But I have the feeling...though I may be wrong...that you're struggling with this so much because you don't want to change the crown molding, when regardless of your final choice, most likely the crown will need fixing anyway. Think about how prominent you want the fp to be in the room. Any overmantel will make it more prominent.

Here's an example where Candice Olson used a cast stone fireplace.

Thanks kippy, yes my mom is going to make cushions.

Pal I guess you're right about the floor but the old fireplace covered the floor corner between the hearth and the wall. So it is unfinished wood. So it would be less work to cover it back up again and I think if I stained/varnished it that it would never look completely right anyway. What do you think of the style I posted? My house is a typical McMansion neo eclectic so it doesn't have a lot of style direction one way or another.

Annie everyone I've spoken to about the crown thinks that I would for sure have to do the whole wall over and possibly the whole room if I mess w the crown. And I'm not thrilled with the look right now anyway. Though taking out the rough hewn beams and lion heads lightened things up, the whole space feels so so heavy to me.

An odd thought for you, if you used one of the fireplace surrounds you like, could you match the existing crown depth to make a box to move the wall/ceiling lights above the fireplace and use to light artwork or that ever you plan on for over the mantle?

You have many options with your application.

YOu could cover the existing wall with sheetrock and then place the cast stone fireplace on top as we did in this example.
