Deep Closet organisation

So, this is a pic of my built-in, rental closet, one of the three in the house-all with same dimensions, '6ft tall and 2ft deep'..inconveniently deep- the clothes in the back tend to get ignored. However, Im only 5'3 tall, and so the top shelf(cosmetics) is useless even if I tiptoe. I have to bend for the 3rd shelf ..lets not even talk about the bottom one..I intend to rear cockroaches and silverfish in there.

The shelves are fixed, and we arent allowed to put in another shelf/divider, etc. In this one, I intend to keep mine and my 2 lil boys' clothes. I dont hang my Indian clothes....so the hanger space is useless-can always use my hubby's closet for that.

I thought of pull out boxes, but again wont clothes in the box' bottom get overlooked? Wire mesh boxes-very expensive here in India, and may not get the right size.

I would appreciate any and all suggestions. Especially about what to store in the top shelf., and ways to divide the shelves without permanent alterations.

P.S:I do have some , lengthy, shallow plywood planks sittin around, which can be fixed and later removed when we leave. Just want ideas of how to use those also.

I suggest that you try to find some plastic bins that are almost see-through and fit the space. That would be two for each of the lower shelves. You could pull out the bins to see what is inside and even label the outside. Or you could cut your plywood to fit the space and support it on the built-in shelves with bricks or purchased legs. The problem with this is that things in the back would be even more hidden than they are now. Then for the upper left you might be able to find a set of shelves that would fit. For the top right, I would put big soft things that you can grab and that won't hurt you when they hit you on the head! This might be extra bedding, towels, out-of-season clothes. For children's clothing I like to fold the whole outfit together, so that one doesn't have to hunt for the "matching" part. I think that your cosmetics could be in a small box that fits on top of other bins or clothing on shelves. Good luck. This will take some experimenting, but something will emerge.

check out thecontainerstore.com for great dividers and containers that would fit onto your shelves to create sections..you need to create shelves within your shelves, its pretty impossible to have an organized closet the way it is now. clear bins with labels are also great way to sort stuff.

If it is not a walk-in closet, then it needs to be at least 2' deep and 5-6' wide at a minimum. If it is a walk-in, then it really depend on who it is for and what you plan on storing in it.

the 9' ceiling height will definitely help you with this. Here's what I would suggest (not knowing how far the side window is from the wall with the door on it: Use the wall with the door as the bed and closet/storage area. Build a closet, and put a loft bed at the top. Because it would have to be custom built, you can decide how high it is or how much storage you need. Kind of like this: [houzz=] or this: [houzz=] Can the space below the back window become a desk? And or/build a desk there with storage flanking it. Keep in mind that this isn't a very large room, and he'll probably want as much floor space as possible (at least my 8 year old does!).

The butterfly drawers would be sturdy enough for grains and cans. I would just make sure the drawer glides are able to hold the weight. I usually look for Blum hinges and glides, they've usually held the best for prior projects. Lazy susans are usually what I love to use for corner storage. However Lazy Susans with a center pole usually cut down on storage space and can be cumbersome when trying to get items in and out. I love the ones that are mounted to a fixed shelf with no center pole. If something falls off it's just like reaching in the back of the cabinet shelf. Plus with the fixed shelf your able to store heavier items like mixers, pots and pan. Magic Corners I find to be awkward when trying to store items, and most you can usually just fit smaller items in the compartments. And the one complaint I get from them is that the glides get sticky over time. If your still wondering what options to go with, find a local kitchen showroom and try them out. Open all the options your looking at and see what fits your lifestyle and habits.
