A simple 3000 SqFt apartment with 4 Bedrooms in the cleanest city of India, Indore. The site was visited first by us only after the design docket was fully prepared and till then we had only seen the site thru videos sent by clients due to the nationwide lockdown. And during the first visit the apartment impressed us with its fabulous 10’ Height and the expansive views of the low-rise city literally making us feel we were ‘in the air’ The layout of the apartment was slightly tweaked to suit the clients lifestyle and taste, and with minimal civil changes the apartment was more refined to adapt to their requirements of a Mandir, a guest bedroom, a Large living cum dining space, a kitchen, a kids bedroom with a separate adventure room and a master bedroom. The Guest bedroom is kept simplistic and minimal with claymen sculptures on the wall emphasising the various emotions on a dark brown wall. The Kids Bedroom is dressy and fairytale like with its canopy bed styling and customised butterfly lights between the twin beds. The room also has a dedicated study desk with pastels splashed all over in the all white room. The kids adventure room on the other side has a large backdrop of the world map with a pink desk to facilitate all art and craft activities. The room is kept almost open with absolutely no furniture to allow more playful and flexible space. A reading corner, a stacked art material closet and lots of space to pin their artworks has been carefully crafted. The highlight of this room is the monkey bar that allows the kids to have all the fun they miss out on going to the parks during restricted situations of lockdown. The master bedroom is a warm and cosy space with a 15’ large live edge wood as the bed back to the simple olive green wall paint. The floor is a herringbone patterned wooden floor adding warmth to this space. The balcony in the master bedroom brings in the much needed break space for that evening cup of coffee. The master bedroom also has a study corner for the imposed work from home culture these days. The Kitchen is a simple and functional setup with light colours and well complimented with a service kitchen, a laundry cum store room and a servants room and toilet. The Living room with open dining space and balconies on east and west side remains the highlight of this project. The Dining table setup is a custom-made table for 10 made with a grey Dekton tile well complimented with the colourful artworks made by the family (including kids) making good use of the family time during the nationwide lockdown. The balcony on the kitchen side is dedicated to kitchen garden with a few spice trees, lime, herbs and essential plants. The living room on the other side is well laid out with its furniture to host 10/12 guests with the balcony overlooking the clean low-rise city with a sunset view at the horizon level. The outdoor setup from IKEA is a flexible seating which can be easily stacked away. The Blue Motiffed Mandir covers itself in art printed motorised curtain when needs to be covered.

The most vibrant space of this house is the dining room which is centrally located and is naturally lit with a skylight reflecting the shape of the pocket between the curved mass. The play of light and shadow thrown on the dining table with the changing seasons and sun positions is quite interesting and makes for a dynamic interaction space. The shape of the dining table is also notable making optimum use of the space available and reflecting the shape of the skylight above it. The built in bench on one side of the table forms a cosy seating corner for a young crowd while chairs can be used by the older generation. Since the spaces created were unique with curved walls, the furniture too had to be custom made to suit the context.

MERAKI DESIGNSMERAKI DESIGNS
Embedded in a plain philosophy of design approach, the residence for two is located on the outskirts of Surat with plenty of open space around the plot. Originally a weekend house, the structure is a part of a gated community with abundant vegetation and fresh air, something that is difficult to discover in the bustling and fast-growing city of Surat. The G+1 volume has its openings facing the common road that runs along the plot area. The exterior of the bungalow gives off an impression of a weekend home, with a sloping roof gracing the elevational treatment and balconies stepping out to oversee the softscape and hardscape design in the common plot. The front facade sees a role glass, plaster, and wooden cladding, showcasing a balanced palette of transparency and opaqueness. The ground floor occupies the common area, which hosts an open plan between the living, dining area, and kitchen. The clientele requirements were quite brief: they desired a home with plenty of natural light paired with simplistic furniture designs to adorn the space. With this brief, the interior designers came up with an original concept and idea for the couple’s home. The built-up space covers an area of 1500 sq. ft. with the primary concern of keeping the design welcoming and intimate. The design language of the interiors has a contemporary dialogue that flows around the house. The contemporary impressions come out in wall paneling, furnishings, color palette, textures, and lighting fixtures too. The familial spaces have a theme of black and white. The classic combination of colors is paired with a design pedagogy that makes the space stand out. The living room is painted white, while the light-gray fabric of the couch highlights the space. The teal-colored poufs and pillows bring in a wave of pop in a light and steady backdrop. The white paneling on the walls makes up for a TV unit and it continues its play to the dining area. The veneer encompassing the dining table and chairs compliment the white paneling and the splash of black in the kitchen beyond. The lighting fixture for the dining area has a rustic and chic vibe to it which intensifies the space’s value. The kitchen stands out very boldly and bravely with its sides smeared in black. The overhead cabinets and drawers have a similar design approach, with black duco coating and golden- colored handles. The glass cabinets with golden knobs give the kitchen a very quaint feel. A breakfast counter blends in with the kitchen, highlighted by a pair of bar stools. The pairing of monochrome colors falls in line with the client’s wish of achieving simplicity. The whites of the space make the room look bigger when it receives plenty of natural light from the openings. The ground floor consists of a bedroom with an attached bathroom and a common washroom. The ground floor bedroom is aligned in a similar color scheme except the white is put together with a shade of light pastel green. The white paneling behind the head of the bed has a calming and sober effect with innocent grooves and an ornamental lighting fixture on both sides of the bed. The headboard is seen as an intricate piece of embroidery and brings in a sense of play in an overall simple layout. The side tables speak a pop of pastel while the cabinets and television unit camouflage with the wall. The dog- legged staircase is supported with black tainted glass. The first floor is occupied by three bedrooms and a pooja room. They follow a similar theme of tranquil and simple colors. The master bedroom on the first floor has a color scheme of pastel green and white. The contemporary panel design lines up from the headboard to the cupboard. The quaint intricacies of pattern and embroidery on curtains and the bed’s back support add a touch of nonchalance. The bedroom facing the entrance carries a hint of gray, black, and white in its wake. The black sconces on both sides of the bed emanate a classical feeling. The children’s bedroom is approached with a playful yet mindful method. The sofa set placed within the cupboard space stretches into a bed when needed, a smart solution to make a space multi- functional. The pooja room is soothing to the eyes with its white and golden luminescence.

This compact four-bedroom villament spread across three floors has been designed for a family of five in the heart of Bengaluru to pair visual symmetry with easy-to-use functionality. The design concept focuses on creating a spacious and open environment, with an overarching palette of shades of white complemented with pops of colour and natural textures, paired with wood and brass accents as focal points. A customised verdant-print wallpaper creates a warm welcome on the top half of the entrance wall, with the bottom paneling painted white. Paired with white accessories—such as the lights on the wall and the floating console table—this makes what would have otherwise been a tiny vestibule feel clutter-free with an element of freshness. The entrance opens into the living room, which is swathed in shades of white, with hints of brass and wood for a touch of warmth and visual intrigue. A wooden swing, which faces the rest of the space, has been placed for the grandparents but can be removed to make the room feel more open when required. The furniture selection and seating options aim to provide a balance between contemporary and traditional aesthetics with a focus on creating a comfortable and inviting space for family gatherings and entertaining guests. Since this area has a double-height ceiling, a geometric-lined moulding running along the length of the entire wall, with hanging rattan lights in front of it, breaks any visual monotony here. A similar linear pattern continues across the TV console, which also allows natural light to stream between the staircase behind it. The otherwise monochrome kitchen, which opens into the living room, displays similar pops of yellow that form a harmoniously warm contrast against the black patterned backsplash tiles. The breakfast counter creates a visual barrier between the two rooms, allowing space for a quick or casual meal when needed. The flooring from the living room continues into this area, and the shared design elements between the two rooms quietly build a striking balance and connection between modern and traditional styles. While the clients wanted French windows running across one side of the dining room, we couldn’t make any changes to the building façade. As a nifty solution, we covered the original windows with wooden blinds (to conceal them while still allowing sunlight to stream in) and built French doors along a thin corridor in front of it. Similar to the rest of the house, a console cabinet in a niche beside the dining table provides maximization of storage here for crockery and cutlery. The staircase along the corridor between the living and dining room leads the way up to the first floor which houses the home office, master bedroom and the daughter’s room. A niche has been carved out below the stairs to hold utilities, and odds and ends around the house. For the couple that loves to read, the home office doubles as a library with ample storage space for their collection of books above, as well as files and work belongings below the desk. A cosy reading bay has also been built along the window. The colour palette here remains neutral, allowing a peaceful and productive work environment. Built as a simple and tranquil space, the master bedroom has predominantly been painted in white with a hint of royal blue to create subtle focal points on the bed’s headboard, the art, and the upholstery in the seating area across the bed. Originally a space for the balcony, this cosy seating space was enclosed to open up the bedroom. Textured wallpaper panels with geometric patterns interspersed between the adjacent wall add depth to the room. The walk-in closet—fitted in an area that was previously a passage—provides ample storage while maintaining a cohesive design aesthetic with the rest of the room. Next to it, the daughter’s room has been designed to hold multiple storage points—a necessity for any growing child who will need a slew of belongings, toys and school material over time. The furniture pieces and placement have been carefully chosen to allow her movement and play across the room through the day, On the second floor, which opens into the terrace, the guest bedroom has been designed to echo the luxury and comfort of a hotel room, without feeling too loud or overwhelming. A burnt orange headboard lends a cosy warm charm to the space, while the parallel-line wallpaper behind it elongates the height of the wall in an otherwise low-ceilinged room.

Versatility and Flexibility of Space was the primary requirement for this young nuclear family. Family dynamics in the Urban Indian setting are changing at a rapid pace. They are moving away from the home being a conservative large joint family controlled by the patriarch to being double income family of two with children. This has direct implications on the spatial organization of the home. For eg. The kitchen is no longer the hiding place for women to disappear into. The kitchen, living room and dining space is now the epicenter of family interaction – The hearth. The most important feature of the design was to do away with conventional boundaries and brick walls between the places of social interaction in the house. Space designed to flow freely using sliding walls and windows, unifying the entire house into one dynamic family space.

Designing a compact home always comes with a unique set of challenges. When Edwin & Esha Stanley, co-founders & design heads at Concepto Studio, were commissioned to design the interiors of an 850 sq ft home in Bangalore, they wanted to make sure every inch counts. They decided to opt for carefully chosen colours, earthy textures and lots of plants for this 2BHK to instil the vibe of a verdant sanctuary of privacy. Its style, realised by the studio, is in equal parts modern and modest. They wanted the home’s design to be an extension of the homeowner’s personality. The main door leads to the open-layout living and dining area, described by a clean colour palette and minimalist design. Wall-to-wall glass windows bring in natural light and create a sense of expanse within minimal square footage. Modern furniture and woody textures further enhance the design narrative, especially accent walls with geometrically patterned wooden strips and battens. The clean-lined minimalism and restrained colour palette make a relatively small space look spacious and serene. All the furniture in the living room has been customised. A dash of richness from the velvety chair and metallic flourishes bring elegance. Textured grey walls juxtapose the warmth of the wood. Floating drawers beneath the Television offer storage without taking up precious floor space. Adjacent to the living space is the dining area. A vast mirror on the console opposite reflects natural light and creates the illusion of more space, replacing the need for a window. Combining grey and light wood creates an exciting combination, merging fantastic with earthy. The marble table-top layers this space with a touch of luxury. Considering the home's restricted footage, the little details create a cohesive and aesthetically pleasing scheme. The kitchen is a quaint yet functional space doused in earthy colours. Soft blues and hints of gold define the area. The concept of the master bedroom continues from the living room, integrating simple furniture and woody elements in a clean, uncluttered space. A padded headboard with curved patterns softens the ambience. The right maroon hue in the bed offsets the pristine white cabinets, tying together the surrounding design and materials, which display different forms and textures. A pendant lamp in gold and a side table flank the bed. The other side has cosy window seating to make the most of the expansive window while offering hidden storage. The second bedroom provides continuity to the design narrative of the quiet colours and linear design of the apartment. It features a soft, padded headboard in curvilinear with crisp modern furniture. A textured wall behind the bed and wooden panelling add visual interest. Like the master bedroom, the window seating doubles as a storage area. This compact home is a testament to making the most of precious space at a premium. Clean-lined layout, furniture with soft edges, and functional design ensure effective space optimisation, making the home appear larger than it is. The elegant yet easy-going design ensures that maximum space can be utilised without compromising on style or aesthetics.

Full-height drapery filters natural light, while statement lighting above adds sculptural drama and warmth. Executed as part of a complete luxury villa design-and-build project, this dining area reflects Lakkadworks’ approach to creating sophisticated, high-end residential interiors in Delhi NCR — where proportion, materiality, and detailing define the space.
