London was once again the site of the latest CANAL project. This time we were on the shores of the river Thames to install a rather special staircase. Working closely with the architect, the design concept was made clear from the start. The staircase is designed to flow organically through the void, maintaining light flow through the balustrades and open treads. Once the design was approved, CANAL began producing detailed drawings, manipulating the design to fit within the physical constraints of the staircase void. Once approved, CANAL fabricated the staircase in Nottingham beginning with the 10mm mild steel stringers and steel treads in. Each 12mm satin polished stainless steel bar was welded to the helical stringer. A mild steel handrail was welded to the spindles to be later clad in sumptuous leather. Once the structure was completed in the factory and quality checks had taken place, the entire staircase was dismantled into manageable sections to be shipped to the site. At the London site, one of CANAL’s skilled installation teams constructed the staircase, providing a usable staircase for the duration of the build. Finally, the staircase stringers were painted white on site and the stained American white oak timber treads were installed.
