Baring Crescent, Exeter

Crayon have undertaken a change of use and listed building application to revert a vacant care home with nine bed spaces into a single family dwelling. The house is in a crescent in the St Leonards conservation area, a vicinity renowned for its large stucco dwellings. Most properties are characterised by ground floor cast iron balconies, central niches and doorways with Tuscan half columns and entablatures. The property was built between 1818 and 1828, during which time all 12 original houses on the crescent were completed. First listed in 1974, the building is of special architectural and historical interest, warranting every effort to preserve it. Where alterations are planned, they seek to restore the building’s original character and make a more positive contribution to the wider context. Original features such as timber shutters and plaster cornicing will be restored, and any new joinery will be painted softwood to match the period.
