Wall Decorations Your Child Will Love

Personalise your kids’ space with these brilliant suggestions for inventive decorations that won’t break the bank

Jo Simmons
Jo Simmons12 November 2016
Houzz UK Contributor. I have been an interiors journalist since 1995, writing several books on design and numerous features for glossy homes mags over the years. For Houzz, I cover decorating ideas and trends and interview designers and professionals for their insights. My favourite pieces to write, though, are Houzz Tours, as I love exploring and learning about real homes. Call me curious — or nosy!

Children love colour, pattern and bold designs, and their bedroom walls deserve to be adorned to reflect this passion. Luckily, you don’t need an art collector’s bank balance to decorate your son or daughter’s space. It’s all about getting creative! Forget pricey paintings and think beyond traditional framed pictures to embrace a world of inventive, and often inexpensive, decorative ideas that will give your child’s room bags of life and personality.

Max a map
World maps are a classic ingredient of any child’s room, but rather than sticking up a poster, source a wall-size map the child can easily study and interact with, adding flags to the places he or she has visited or would like to explore.

Grow your own
This cute tree design combines shelves fitted into the branches, so it doubles as storage, too. Wall stickers are widely available, or simply cut shapes from wallpaper remnants and paste them up for a bespoke look.

Energise with pretty pompoms
Tissue paper pompoms hanging down one wall are inexpensive and easy to make. These ones in different shades of pink add a shot of fun to a pretty space.
Curate a personal gallery
Hanging paintings and artworks created by your child gives their room a personal feel. Framing their pieces helps to preserve and protect them, too.

Choose a hot shot
Getting a photograph blown up creates a large-scale wall covering that is more personal than wallpaper. Here, a baseball image has been reproduced on panels for an exciting, graphic effect.

Go bespoke
Commissioning an artist to create a mural on a child’s bedroom wall is not a bargain option, but both you and your child will have input in the final image, and this room shows how beautiful and original a bespoke design can look.

Get the heads up
Teddy heads mounted on a wall make a witty, quirky decoration – a kiddie take on the traditional stuffed stag’s head, perhaps!
Hang a notice board
A pinboard makes a great addition to a boy or girl’s room. It allows them to fix any image they like to their wall, from postcards to certificates and drawings, and the display can easily be changed without damaging the wall itself.

Bring out the flags
Bunting is cheerful, colourful and flexible. It’s easy to make with just a sewing machine and a handful of fabric offcuts, and adds an undeniably jolly feel to any room. Pick the fabric to suit the child, from ticking stripes to cute florals.

Pick a letter
Typography works beautifully in a child’s room, helping them learn their letters from a young age. Here, wallpaper with a design by illustrator Quentin Blake is topped off with the framed initials of this room’s young resident.
