View 1 Exterior With 4 Different Color Schemes
By playing with hues on the door, window sashes and exterior walls, you can dramatically change the look of your home
Spring is in the air, and that means we are approaching peak house-painting season. If your home is ready for a new coat of paint, now’s the time to consider changing things up a bit. To get your creative juices flowing, we rendered four different paint color options on one home to show what a difference a change in paint color can make.
1. Warm and Dark
I was keen to see how this house would look with a slightly warmer and darker — but still neutral — siding color. I chose a warm gray here, which has a soothing, earthy quality.
This siding color is a solid option if your home is partially clad in brick or stone that you need to coordinate with. Often such cladding materials have small bits of warm grays or cool browns in them that you can pull out and use for the siding color.
Warm and vibrant hues are the most welcoming colors for a front door, and this bold coral does the job here. The clean white trim color adds some brightness to the palette.

Try it: Get this look with Eagle Rock for the siding, Picante for the front door and Simply White for the trim, all from Benjamin Moore.
2. Cool and Dark
This blue-green hue is an admittedly unusual house color, but this particular shade works well because it’s dark and fairly neutral. It’s similar to neutral navy, but with a touch of green added.
Such a cool and dark house color is not for everyone nor for every house, but because this particular home has clean lines and a simple form, the color is elegant rather than overwhelming. The splash of watery blue on the front door and the super crisp trim color break up the expanse of the deeper siding color.

Try it: Get this look with Sequoia Glade for the siding, Gentle Wave for the front door and Ultra White for the trim, all from Valspar.
3. Single Color Family
Here’s another unusual siding color, this one a deep purple-gray hybrid. Even though these are atypical exterior colors, it works because the colors all belong to the same color family of purple.
As with the previous palette, this siding color is dramatically dark but veers neutral because it has plenty of gray in it. A pure purple would come on too strong here.
The more vibrant lavender door color adds a lovely, lively touch. The trim is again kept light, but this particular white has purple undertones that complement the other colors on the house.

4. Light Siding With Dark Trim
For those who prefer lighter siding colors, think about changing things up by going for a contrasting, darker trim color. You need to make sure your door and window trim is in good shape and worth having attention called to it, because it will really stand out with this scheme.
The siding and trim colors here are neutrals, so you could go with just about any door color you want. If you favor neutrals all the way, you could paint the door the trim color, or black. I like a splash of fun color at the front door, and this fresh and vivacious green is a great choice to greet visitors with gusto.

One of my can’t miss, go-to exterior color schemes is a light neutral siding color, such as a shade of soft gray or taupe, paired with white trim and a dash of contrast on the front door, in either a dark neutral or a vibrant bright hue.
This is usually my starting point when helping a design client pick exterior colors. From here we can explore a more dramatic siding color or trim color, or, if we keep the siding and trim neutral, we can go super dramatic or bold for the front door.
I like the current color scheme on this home, especially the splash of green at the door. But I wanted to see how I could change the look of the house simply by changing the color palette. I came up with four alternative schemes for this house that I applied via photograph rendering software. Let’s have a look.
