The 10 Most Popular Closets From Around the World

For this list we’ve picked the closet photo from each country that was most saved by Houzz users around the world in 2021, including within the country itself. The result? Out-of-the-box thinking that lets a small space do double or even triple duty – interpreted through the lens of local design trends. What happens when you combine a bookcase, a closet and French homeowners’ love for mint green? Read on to find out.
By the riverside
India

This closet is in the master bedroom of a spacious Bengaluru apartment designed by By the riverside for a family of five. The mirror-fronted wardrobes are framed in a glossy white finish, embellished with gold-coloured pulls. Another set of cabinets overtop the main closet extend the storage to the ceiling on one side.

Like the rest of the home, this closet is all about understated, clean-cut luxury. The darker wooden floor accentuates the all-white finish of the walls and the storage framework. The mirrors bring the glam quotient while adding the illusion of space to a narrow room.
Plot Architecture
Australia

The skinny, shaker-style cabinetry in timeless white in this kitchen from Plot Architecture reflects the easygoing yet sophisticated look that Australians embrace. The aesthetic – casual yet with just enough detail to anchor a room, able to work in both contemporary and historical homes, or homes that have both elements as most renovations do – perfectly captures one of our main decorating themes.
Stéphanie Revol
France

This closet is situated in the main bedroom of a house in Asnières, near Paris, renovated by interior designer Stéphanie Revol from In Volumine agency. This custom-made joinery comprises a wardrobe and a bookshelf on the side. The mint green colour is currently trending in France and contrasts with the leather handles. The closet doesn’t quite reach the ceiling, in order to preserve the room’s gorgeous mouldings. This unit really shows the value of custom joinery in making the most of a small space.
Heger & Cie. - Die Häusermanufaktur
Germany

This space-saving walk-in closet designed by Heger & Cie, fitted out with storage units custom made by mayr + mayr, shows how to make clever use of the space under a sloping roof. The idea was to adapt the basic principle behind an apothecary cabinet to clothes storage. The units are easy to roll out as they are set on casters, while in its closed state the unit captivates with its minimalist design.

Daniele Mennini
Italy

This custom-made wardrobe is on a mezzanine in a renovated flat in Rome. The ceiling was so high that it allowed architect Daniele Mennini to plan a small mezzanine over the bed and headboard. Protected with a light iron banister, the result is a lightweight and streamlined walk-through storage setup. The palette of the closet’s white wood doors and the light-blue headboard and ceiling give the room a fresh feel.
株式会社seki.design
Japan

This doorless walk-through-closet is on the ground floor of a small, three-story house in Kōbe city, designed by local architect Noriaki Seki of seki.design. The closet is accessible from both the entrance and the back room, which also leads to a patio with exterior staircases. The weightless design made it possible to install a closet of this size in a tiny house – which appeals to many Japanese readers. The shelving keeps mess tucked away while allowing the family to get creative with how they display their possessions.
NA-DESIGN
Russia

Russian users loved the idea of the cabinet handles matching the skirting board and flooring in this closet by Na-Design: It can be tricky to match furniture veneer, handles and solid wood features perfectly, as they usually come from different suppliers.

Readers also noted the clever length of the handles – they’re convenient for both adults and children of any height. Of course, the closet’s beautiful interior appealed to readers too.
CICERONE GROUP
Spain

Built out of solid wood, this sleek and spacious closet, designed by Cicerone Group, is situated in a large flat in Valencia that offers beautiful views over the city’s botanical garden. The closet’s large wooden sliding doors really stand out, and reveal a spacious and warm dressing area when opened. The wood also helps define the closet area and separate it from the rest of the bedroom, which has porcelain tile flooring instead.
Bhuva Construction
United Kingdom

This walk-in wardrobe by Bhuva Construction combines open display shelving on one side with closed cabinets on the other to create a calm and organised space that allows favourite pieces to be displayed, with all the other items neatly tucked away.

The bespoke cabinets on the left, which go all the way up to the ceiling, cleverly make the most of every inch of space and the addition of a window seat creates a welcoming ‘room’ rather than just a functional wardrobe.
Innate Studio
United States

A traditional chandelier adds a touch of elegance to this bright and functional walk-in closet in New York. The spacious room gains additional light from a double-hung window. Recessed drawers, pull-out shelves and closet rods provide abundant storage to accommodate shoes, purses, sweaters, hanging garments, accessories and other items. The closet maintains the clean white-and-wood palette of the rest of the home by Innate Studio of Wilton, Connecticut.
