Making space for toys and books in your kids’ room can be so much fun (and frustrating). But if you are bored with typical straight lines for a bookshelf, I am sure they aren’t inspiring your children, either. You will be surprised to see how small changes can bring about a drastic makeover for a space. So get creative and add a dollop of quirkiness to your child’s room. They and their sense of creativity will love it.

The bookworm
A curved shelf crafted in the shape of a bookworm forms a beautiful piece of wall art. This design provides ample space for books, CDs and knicknacks. The curling display creates an element of interest and appears to be in perfect flow and rhythm; you could go a step further and paint the wall in an accent colour. Make sure you keep the surrounding area light, with minimum furniture around it to keep all attention on the wall.

Happy tree
If your child is fond of nature, bring some of it indoors with a tree shelf. Seen here is a tree outline with floating shelves in vivacious colours and shapes springing from the branches. The kids’ room is one place that can effortlessly handle such geometric shapes and contrasting colours. Reaching out for a book would be so much fun here.

Sculpted interests
Check out this oversized sculpture in the shape of a ship. The design has been taken to a different level, where the hull of the ship becomes a table top and there are a series of shelves attached to the mast. This is in a kitchen, but I think it is perfect for a kid’s room. You can simply sculpt anything that your kid is fascinated about and introduce multiple utility and shelving systems into it.

Stepped display
How about converting the bunk beds and display area into an adventure zone? Check how the staggered steps double as creative shelving units.

Tip: For safety, strengthen the steps with additional plywood and load-bearing members so that it is strong enough to take the weight of the children when they clamber up and down.

Fun and functional
Your babies will outgrow their childhood preferences in no time, so why not let them have fun with them as long as possible? Introduce their favourite theme to the bookshelf – in this image we have a simple grid of shelves which have been given a quick makeover by fixing panels inspired by a castle. Once your child gets over castles, simply take the panels down and fashion the shelves according to their new obsession.

Floating ideas
There is so much you can do with floating shelves. They bring an element of playfulness and are perfect places to drench in colours and patterns. In this image, just see how the shelves become floating clouds in the sky; you could even fashion them as little boats in the ocean or introduce odd shapes to hold toys.

Circular cubbyholes
Incorporating a series of circles as shelves can create beautiful organic forms, and make a gorgeous display. They are ideal for tucking in giant soft toys.

Working wheel
How about creating a Ferris-wheel bookshelf that rotates around a window? Wouldn’t it be amazing if a circular window were installed during the construction phase itself? If it’s too late fro that, the wheel can also be attached to a plain wall. The result achieved will be stunning and your child probably would not need any coaxing to search for a book.

Tip: In case there is no window in the middle, and you’re installing it on a wall, consider covering the space with some good wall art.

Random shelf infills
Shelves need not always be organised to give a clutter-free look. This is a classic example in which the shelves are designed in the form of a cross and are haphazardly placed on a wooden panel. This creates a cluttered display and gives kids the freedom to randomly put things wherever they want.
