No More Cartoon Characters for This Preteen’s Bedroom
Texture, color and lighting create a soft and sophisticated look
Texture. This design element takes the preteen’s room to the next level of sophistication, Crow says. “I love texture, so the more texture in a room, the happier I am,” she says.
As noted, the ceiling has different textures of paint and the wall behind the bed has a little glitter to give it a different texture.
Beyond that, Crow brought in different textures through the bedding, chandelier and patterned rug and through the bench at the end of the bed. When picking textures, the designer doesn’t limit herself. The more textures, the better, in her opinion.

Bedding. Appliqué florals cascade across the bed’s duvet cover. The mom and daughter weren’t keen on patterned bedding, and the moment the three of them saw this duvet with all its texture, they knew it was the right choice. Crow paired the duvet cover and its matching pillowcases with two solid-colored Euro shams and a fuzzy pillow. The pillow’s pink fluff matches that of the bench at the end of the bed.
Pro tip. If you’re looking for similar calming bedding, Crow recommends sticking to light pink, white, blush or cream.

Drapes and lighting. The sheer drapes — with a little sparkle woven in — add elegance and allow lots of light to filter into the room. Crow added Roman shades with an opaque lining that can be pulled down for privacy.
On each side of the bed, Crow added two glass lamps. She placed them in front of the windows so that the sunlight can bounce off them and make the room even brighter.

Chandelier. Overhead, a crystal chandelier bounces around even more light. You can also use a light fixture with glass or jeweled beads to get the same light-bouncing effect, Crow says. “Basically, anything to make the room sparkle,” she says.
Pro tip. Consult a lighting professional if you are unsure how to hang your light fixture. Crow says she always hires a pro to ensure that lights are hung at the right height and are secure.

Table space. Across from the bed, Crow added a makeup table that can also function as a desk. It’s dual function saves space, but also gives the girl a very grown-up space where she can get ready and do schoolwork.
The girl is thrilled about her new room, Crow says, and is especially excited about her sparkly new sequin-backed chair.

Bedroom at a Glance
Location: Rocklin, California
Size: 120 square feet (11.1 square meters)
Designer: Samantha Crow of Juxtaposed Interiors
This 11-year-old girl’s family recently moved from San Jose, California, to Rocklin, also in California, and as part of the move, the preteen left behind her Winnie the Pooh wall decals and Disney wallpaper. And she was ready to do that.
In the family’s new home, she wanted a more sophisticated room, and her mom was on board to make her dream bedroom happen. They hired designer Samantha Crow to help make the transition smooth.
Colors. The colors of the room set its tone, and Crow proposed pink and gray, knowing that the goal was to have something calming, not loud. Pink and gray work well together to create a relaxing environment, Crow says, and the softer hues won’t look dated as the girl gets older.
Then Crow brought in white and cream elements to add more depth. “I started with a soft color palette, and it bloomed from there,” Crow says.
Having a calming, retreat-like bedroom is really popular right now, Crow says. To get this look and feel, clients are investing more in their bedroom, such as buying high-quality linens and luxe sheer fabrics.
Paint. If you look closely at the ceiling, you’ll notice its pink color and stripes. The stripes aren’t a different color, but instead the same paint color with a high-gloss sheen.
For behind the bed, the painter mixed gray paint and glitter to give the room a little sparkle and additional texture.
