Gorgeous Bedroom for a Girl to Grow Into
A designer adds custom built-ins, personalized wallpaper and a hanging chair to this Northern California bedroom
The wall behind the bed is covered in a custom wallpaper that features coral and blue to complement the room’s color palette. Evans customized the two wall sconces above the headboard by adding cloth tape in blush to the the tops and bottoms of the linen shades.

The built-in desk to the left of the bed provides a space for writing letters, drawing and doing homework. The acrylic desk chair blends in visually and adds a contemporary touch. The open shelves above the desk include a collection of books and storage bins. Evans had a magnetic board placed behind the wallpaper above the desk for hanging art, notes and photos without ruining the wallpaper with pins or tape.
A built-in dresser on the right side of the bed provides ample storage for clothes; there’s also a closet on the opposite side of the room. Evans customized the queen bed by swapping out the hardware on the drawers with acrylic pulls to match the rest of the built-ins.

One of the girl’s major requests was a space for hanging out with her friends. “When it came to hanging out, I thought, ‘What’s better than a hanging chair?’” Evans says. The white rattan hanging chair provides an ideal perch for talking to friends or reading a good book.

Bedroom at a Glance
Who lives here: A 7-year-old girl
Location: San Mateo, California
Size: About 200 square feet (19 square meters)
Designer: Lauren Evans Interiors
Designer Lauren Evans was tasked with renovating a bedroom that would work well for a San Mateo, California, family’s 7-year-old girl while providing the function and style for the room to gracefully age throughout her teenage years. By adding a wall of built-ins behind the bed, Evans created loads of storage, a desk area and open shelves for the young girl to display her favorite items. A color palette of blues, coral and blush provides a youthful feel without being too saccharine. “The color blue was a must-include,” Evans says. “She didn’t want an all-pink bedroom.”
