Are you in love with the timeless beauty of marble yet frustrated by the limited ways (read floors and countertops) it is usually used in a house? We put together some spaces that use marble but do so with a twist. Here are inspiring ideas and looks to steal.
Giffin & Crane General Contractors, Inc.
As carpet flooring
Marble is a popular go-to material when it comes to bringing in a sense of opulence to a space. In this bathroom, an intricate inlay pattern is designed on the marble as a carpet. Take a look at the reflections created on the mirrored cabinets – it’s a great way to enhance the inlay’s effect.

Use onyx
Use this material in small doses but make it the star attraction of the space. Bring in an onyx vanity counter in a small bathroom and see the space get transformed.

You can also add warmth with honey onyx. The bar is an ideal place to go all out with back-lit onyx. In this space, it has been pulled further from the bar into the floor to heighten its effect.

Tip: You can consider using back-lit onyx on staircases too. It blends well with the wooden treads.
Design with marble jaalis
Bring in a sense of heritage and grandeur with marble jaalis. Although these have been used since centuries in India and are a staple of our architectural heritage, for me they pair beautifully with different kinds of interiors and styles.

Create ornate columns
Nothing says indulgence and luxury like pillars of marble. You can bring in a bit of this throwback regal nostalgia into your home with ornate columns. In this very envy-worthy space, see how the columns frame the bathtub to create a royal stepped entry into the tub? To build on the ostentatious, royal look, wooden cabinets are designed with a detailed moulding, and the ceiling design has also been elaborately carried out. Live life king size? Wish we could.

Tip: Use smaller columns as pedestals for your standalone showpieces or as a base for glass tabletops.

Combine marble and wood
Where marble brings a polished shine to a space, wood dials it down and roots it. The combination of both is fascinating.

As in the image, mix and match marble with wood for your floors. The warm strips of wood and the contrasting cold marble give a whole new depth to a space. This could be achieved either through pre-ordered tiles or by customising your own floor.

Travertine for a raw porous look
To give your walls a natural and porous look, consider travertine cladding. In this image, the stone also holds the light boxes. Just see how the indirect light highlights the warm hues and imperfections of the stone.

Tip: Travertine is often used in living rooms; you could use it as a back panel to the TV or as an accent wall with indirect lighting. At the time of installation, make sure several coats of sealer are applied to prevent it from scratches or stains.

Minimalism with black and white
This contemporary city bathroom uses black marble as an accent wall that extends onto the floor. A subtle contrast is created between the lighter and darker materials. Black marble with its inherent pattern adds a graceful depth to this space.
Marble in the kitchen, dining room
For many, there is no place better in the house for marble than in the kitchen. Here, Calcutta marble is used on countertops, and a seamlessness is achieved by the use of complementary polyurethane wall. The same marble is carried through onto the floors to lock the pristine look.

In this dining room, a marble dining tabletop is made – its smooth shine complements the floor and the overall palette of the space. A similarly textured light-fixture seals the deal.

In the outdoors
Say no to predictable outdoor furniture. A rooftop terrace or a garden can be a great place to incorporate marble. Use it for the buffet counter or as a fixed tabletop. You can also create a full-on seating arrangement from it.
