Well-designed bathrooms involve smart planning. They are also clearly divided into a wet zone that accommodates the standing shower area or bathtub, and a dry zone that includes the commode and the wash basin. Additionally, the shower area is designed in such a way that when the wet area is used for bathing, the water does not spill over into the dry area of the bathroom. This also ensures a clean and easy-to-maintain bathroom.

Here’s how to create a leak-free shower area within your bathroom.

1. Provide a gentle slope
The shower area should be sloped towards the drain trap; an ideal slope ranges between 1/4 inch to 1/8 inch per running foot. This gentle slope guides the running water towards the drain and allows it to get drained properly. Note that if shower area is not given sufficient slope, the water accumulates and results in clogging, stagnant water problems or even flooding, which may result in dampness due to water penetration into the floor slab and walls.

2. Install a drain for the shower area
Install a drain with an easy-to-access drain trap that helps running water to drain easily. Here, in this example, a channel-style drain is installed to drain water along the full width of the shower area.

3. Construct a shower curb
A shower curb creates a demarcation between the shower area and the dry area of the bathroom. It should be high enough to keep the water within the shower area; its height ranges between 4 to 6 inches. In this example, just see how a tiled partition wall stops water from splashing all over the bathroom, as does the curb at the walk-in access to the shower area.

Tip: The shower curb can be a tripping hazard, so it is strongly recommended to finish or clad the curb in a different colour from the flooring.

4. Install a shower door
Shower doors are available in framed and frameless versions. They are a great way to prevent water from spilling over into the dry area of the bathroom. One must use silicone shower seals to waterproof gaps between the junction of the glass door and floor surface.

In this example, a framed shower door is installed over the bathtub to create a leak-free wet zone.

5. Hang a shower curtain
The easiest way to create a leak-free bathroom is by installing a shower curtain. Remember to keep the curtain within the curb or bathtub wall to ensure that when the shower is in use, the water drips back into the wet area and does not spill into the dry area of the bathroom.

6. Seal with elastomeric sealants
Silicone sealants are highly recommended to seal the joints between the shower curb and the flooring. Elastomeric sealants are flexible, durable and highly resistant to water. Make it a point to only go for good-quality sealants that are resistant to mould and mildew.

7. Install a standalone shower pod
Shower pods are standalone cubicles that are available in a ready-to-install form. These cubicles are ergonomically designed, and are maintenance-free, leak-proof and waterproof. The shower pods are effective in preventing water from escaping into the dry areas of the bathroom.
