How Brown Can Be the Hero of Your Decor
It checks all boxes: It's an inviting and versatile hue that can make your home seem warm, cosy and welcoming
Most of us love to use brown in our interiors – it has a rich, earthy quality and is a versatile and generous colour: brown can be used as a low-key partner to lift other hues and can also piggyback on lighter palettes to be the star of the space. Different shades of browns can be used together too, for a tone-on-tone story … the possibilities are unlimited!
Rustic, woody elements paired with chic and contemporary finishes make up this living room by Moriq Interiors. The interior is full of light-brown tables and stools; shots of dark brown are provided by the leather wingback chair, the metallic column on the right and the frame of the round mirror. The walls are a backdrop of grey that balances the colours in the space. The entire palette comes together to create a warm, welcoming environment.

In this space by FADD Studio, the printed and textured curtain in shades of brown is offset by the chair in a solid shade of rust. Notice how the chair breaks the monotony of the brown curtains and flooring, giving the room a tone-on-tone effect and a sense of movement.
The whites of the hazelnut-chequered flooring, walls and pale cabinets provide a smart contrast to the wooden island and the brown pattern on the floor, making the colour immediately stand out in the kitchen. The variations from dark to soft brown tones create beautiful layering.
The dark-brown four-poster bed, side tables and intricately carved lanterns get a touch of contrast from the vibrant bed linen, cushions and rug in this room by Tara Design. The light-brown wooden flooring contributes to the dominating scheme of earth colours. The pale walls act as a foil to the colours, making them stand out.
Here, Sonali Shah has unified the sitting area with colour – the coffee-brown sofa, side table and rug. A hint of yellow with brown comes in through the accent wall treatment that softens the contrast between deep browns and white in the space. The white marble table, walls and flooring provide a neutral canvas to give these solid colours a lift.
The glossy brown floor and the reflective cladding on the walls, along with the stainless-steel basin and a round mirror, create a glittering scape in this bathroom by Fulcrum Studio. The dark, metallic hues meld with each other seamlessly, and the hanging bulbs bring subtle illumination, creating a mesmerising, magnetic effect.
There is nothing quite like the look of brick. Although the mood is set by the beautiful terracotta brown of the double-height brick walls in this room by Nirvana Design Studio, the shade does not darken the interiors. The tall windows, grey flooring and sofa, and white ceiling, all contribute to keep the colour palette light and the area well-lit and airy.

In this dining space with brown as the base hue, a multitude of colours are cleverly balanced against each other. The space is light, subtle and sophisticated. The secret to achieving this look is by providing colour relief, with hints of brown, scattered over the space – through the chairs, the floor and in the wall treatment. No single colour overpowers the scheme.
